Substitute Wife, Genius CEO novel Chapter 154

"You vile old bat, is your mouth full of actual garbage? All you do is spew filth. Say one more word, I dare you!" Summer slammed her hands on the table and shot up from her chair.

Mrs. Vance opened her mouth to shriek again, and Summer grabbed a water cup from the table and splashed it directly into her face. "Wash out that foul mouth of yours!"

"You wretched brat, I'll kill you!" Mrs. Vance shrieked in absolute fury, raising her cane as she lunged at Summer.

The officers immediately restrained the old woman.

Summer was already immune to the disgusting curses spilling from the old woman's lips.

"You wicked old bat, now that my dad is dead, my mother and I have zero obligation to care for you. You're on your own now."

Summer adamantly refused to sign the forgiveness waiver; she was determined to make the Vance family pay.

As for Lily, Summer recalled how she had been locked in a holding cell and relentlessly interrogated by the police for hours.

She had questioned it at the time.

What did the cops say to her back then?

They had said: Because Summer had a conflict with the victim, the victim suspected Summer's target wasn't the pet, but a human.

Poisoning a pet versus poisoning a human were obviously entirely different felonies.

That was their justification for interrogating her for twenty-four hours.

Summer turned to the detective in charge of the case. "Officer, Lily Sutton and I have bad blood. Not long ago, when my father was having surgery, she deliberately stole his lead surgeon and made thinly veiled threats about wanting him dead. So now that my father has actually died, I have every reason to suspect this wasn't just an accident. I believe Lily intentionally orchestrated this entire thing, manipulating events to make a premeditated murder look like a tragic mishap. I'm officially requesting that you reopen Lily Sutton's interrogation."

A flicker of hesitation crossed the detective's eyes. After all, Xavier Sterling had personally escorted Lily to the station.

Furthermore, the coffee shop security footage didn't show anything explicitly incriminating.

Lily had merely asked Tiffany why they were looking for Summer and hadn't said anything else.

When Edward was fatally injured, Lily wasn't even at the scene.

"Finding the evidence is the police department's job, isn't it?" Summer smiled thinly at the detective. "Besides, I'm not just making wild accusations. I have witnesses, and I have hospital security footage to back it up. Don't the police always preach about never wronging an innocent person and never letting a guilty one go free? I firmly believe my father did not die from a random accident. I expect the police to thoroughly investigate Lily Sutton."

Sebastian handed over a meticulously prepared file of evidence.

The only person missing was Leo.

"Xavier, get your people out of my house," Summer demanded coldly, before turning to the agent beside her. "Hugh, excuse me for a moment. Feel free to look around, ignore these people."

Summer bypassed them entirely and marched up to the second floor, heading straight for Leo's room.

"Leo?"

Leo was curled up in bed. Hearing her voice, he barely cracked an eye open, looking incredibly lethargic.

Once he realized it was Summer, he bolted upright and threw his arms around her.

"Mom! You're back!"

Leo's voice sounded horribly wrong, thick with congestion. Summer touched his forehead and felt her stomach drop. He was burning up.

He had a fever.

It was likely a combination of the sheer terror he experienced when the police dragged her away and a potential infection from the wound on his forehead.
