Summer wasn't an idiot. Gripping Leo tight, she immediately broke into a sprint.
Hugh had no idea what was going on, but seeing her run, he hugged his laptop to his chest and bolted right behind her.
Piecing together the fragments of the conversation, Xavier realized what she had done and barked furiously, "Summer!"
"Stop her!"
Carrying a child and a heavy backpack, Summer couldn't run fast. Catching sight of Hugh beside her, she shouted, "Hugh, do me a favor! I need to get my son to a hospital!"
Without Summer, Hugh never would have seen this kind of money in his lifetime. She was practically his financial savior.
"I've got you covered, boss!" Hugh shouted enthusiastically. He spun around and threw his arms wide to block the charging bodyguards.
"Hey guys, guys, let's use our words! No need for violence, we live in a civilized society! Let's just talk!"
"Get out of the way!"
The bodyguards violently shoved Hugh aside, but Summer was already in her car. She slammed on the gas and tore out of the driveway.
Terrified of being held liable, Hugh scrambled into his own sedan and sped off right behind her.
Lily burst into tears of sheer outrage. "Xavier, Miles, the police are saying Summer formally accused me of the premeditated murder of Edward Vance! They're demanding I come in for a criminal investigation! How could she accuse me of something so vile just because she's jealous?!"
"I knew she was grieving because her dad just died, so I bit my tongue and let her insult me. But this is completely crossing the line!"
"She is such an evil woman!" Hunter chimed in furiously, tugging aggressively on Xavier's sleeve. "Xavier, you can't let her get away with this!"
Xavier was visibly livid with Summer's actions. Whatever guilt he harbored over Edward's death was instantly incinerated by rage.
He pulled Lily into a protective embrace. "Let's head to the station first. Don't worry, as long as I'm here, nothing is going to happen to you."
As for the rest, he would handle it personally.
Although Lily was furious at Summer, seeing Xavier's darkened expression assured her that the rift between him and Summer was expanding beyond repair.
The two of them could never go back to how things used to be. Soon, Xavier would belong to her entirely.
The realization made Lily's mood improve dramatically.
**
"Tessa, today is the old man's funeral. We just want to lay a wreath and pay our final respects."
It was Xavier's voice.
"We don't want your respects! We don't want anything from you! Get out before I throw you out myself!"
Xavier's tone cooled. "Are you absolutely certain you want to cause a scene and disturb his peace?"
"If you won't leave, then don't blame me for getting violent." Tessa grabbed a heavy yard broom, fully prepared to start swinging, but someone snatched it from her hands.
Tessa whipped around in anger, only to freeze when she saw it was Summer.
"Summer, you—"
"I'll handle this myself!" Summer raised the heavy broom and swung it directly at Xavier. "Get out!"
Xavier, terrified that Summer was having a mental break and might actually strike Lily, lunged forward and threw his arms around Summer, taking the brunt of the blow without flinching.
Lily put on a heartbreaking look of concern, peering safely from behind Xavier's arm. "Summer, we are guests. Xavier canceled multiple multi-million-dollar meetings just to rush over here. How can you treat him like this?"
