Substitute Wife, Genius CEO novel Chapter 188

Wesley replied firmly, "...I'm not taking Summer's case, and that's final. Stay out of it. Otherwise, I'll just sleep at the lab or the hospital. I won't come home for the holidays, and I'll never get married or give you great-grandkids."

Dr. Whitmore choked on his words, looking like a snake pinned by its neck.

His grandson had astonishing medical talent; his future achievements would undoubtedly surpass his own.

But nobody was perfect. As brilliant as Wesley was in medicine, he was equally clueless when it came to his personal life.

He was thirty-three years old and had never had a girlfriend. So, naturally, Dr. Whitmore had taken up two major hobbies in his retirement.

The first was collecting art; the second was playing matchmaker to find his grandson a wife.

That was a huge part of why Dr. Whitmore had been so incredibly enthusiastic when Summer came to visit.

Wesley turned to Summer with an apologetic nod. "Ms. Vance, I truly apologize, but my schedule is fully booked until next year. If you don't mind waiting, you can book an appointment through the hospital's public system. Now, if you'll excuse me, I have matters to attend to."

Wesley offered a polite bow and turned to leave. In a moment of panic, Summer reached out and grabbed the edge of his coat.

Wesley glanced back at her hand. "Ms. Vance?"

Realizing she had crossed a line, Summer immediately let go. "Mr. Whitmore, I can apologize for what happened the other day. I shouldn't have told you to shut up, and I shouldn't have said I wasn't interested in knowing you. Actually, I'm very interested. Could we exchange contact info?"

"Yes, absolutely, that's a great idea!" Dr. Whitmore nodded vigorously, his eyes practically sparkling.

*When a woman pursues a man, it's just a matter of time!* With Summer being this proactive, she was bound to win Wesley over in no time.

Dr. Whitmore completely disregarded Wesley's earlier claim that Summer was taken, assuming his grandson was just making excuses to avoid a setup.

Wesley shot his grandfather a warning glare, effectively shutting him up.

Wesley then turned back to Summer, offering a polite but distant rejection. "My apologies."

He gave another slight nod, turned, and strode away.

Summer hesitated for barely a second before sprinting after him.

Dr. Whitmore froze. *She really is married? So that brat wasn't lying to me after all.*

Refusing to give up, Dr. Whitmore pressed, "Then why aren't you wearing your wedding ring?"

Perhaps realizing the question was entirely too intrusive, the old man quickly backpedaled. "Don't get me wrong, Summer. I just really wanted to set you up with my grandson. He's been single his whole life, never even dated, but his character is flawless. He doesn't smoke, drink, or gamble. He's family-oriented, filial, and incredibly handsome. And he doesn't have any hidden... 'issues.' He's just always been too focused on work to have a love life. Bottom line, he's a good man."

Summer had grown quite fond of the quirky old man. She smiled gently. "It's okay, Grandpa. I'm not wearing my ring because I'm getting a divorce."

"A divorce? Really?" Good women were hard to find these days, and this girl seemed fantastic. To borrow her own words, he felt an instant connection.

He absolutely could not let someone else swoop in and steal her; he had to secure her place in line.

With that thought fueling him, Dr. Whitmore asked, "Then... would you be open to a blind date once your divorce is finalized?"

Summer was speechless.
