Silas worked until 3 AM, completely draining every last drop of his energy before finally returning to the master bedroom.
He took a quick shower, then pulled out a thick quilt and laid it out on the floor. Just moments ago, he had been utterly exhausted, feeling like he would pass out the second his head hit the pillow.
But the moment he actually lay down, he found himself incredibly wide awake.
His mind was entirely consumed by images of Summer, and his eyes kept drifting uncontrollably up to the bed, practically glued to her face.
It turned out that when you love someone, they don't even have to do anything. Just looking at them, just sharing the same room, is enough to fill your heart with overwhelming joy.
The next morning.
Summer planned to wake up early and make breakfast to properly play the role of a devoted granddaughter-in-law.
But Grandpa Alaric beat her to it. He was already out on the balcony watering the plants.
Summer greeted him and headed for the kitchen to start cooking. Grandpa Alaric's face instantly darkened.
"That rascal Silas! I can't believe he actually has the nerve to make his wife cook breakfast!"
Summer immediately jumped to Silas's defense, explaining that he had stayed up late working.
But Grandpa Alaric just assumed Summer was being sweet and deliberately covering for Silas. Furious, he marched over to the master bedroom and hammered on the door.
"Silas, you useless brat! Get out of bed right now and make breakfast for your wife and me!"
Startled awake by the pounding, Silas hurriedly packed up his makeshift floor-bed and opened the door.
Grandpa Alaric glared at him, lowering his voice into a sharp reprimand. "You useless boy. What a waste of all that height and muscle."
Silas stared at him in utter confusion. "?"
"What are you looking at?" Grandpa Alaric grumbled. "Are the rumors true? Are you actually impotent?" Otherwise, how on earth could Summer be up so early with enough energy to cook breakfast?
It was glaringly obvious that Silas simply hadn't put in any effort last night.
Especially after he had explicitly told them he was deaf and wouldn't hear a thing!
Grandpa Alaric let out a heavy huff and walked away, feeling like his hopes of Silas giving him a great-granddaughter were entirely dashed.
Two days later.
Summer received the interview results from the Sutton Group. She was rejected.
Naturally, HR didn't state the real reason, merely citing that she "didn't meet their employment standards."
Summer didn't care at all. But just a second later, she received a call from the Sutton family, insisting she come home for dinner.
It only took Summer two seconds to figure out the whole story. She had been rejected by the Sutton Group, and Lily clearly wanted a front-row seat to mock her.
A good sister indeed, always finding a way to get what she wants.
Summer arrived at the estate after work. Just as she turned off her engine, Xavier's car pulled into the driveway as well.
Lily had been staying at her parents' house recently so Lydia could pamper her during her pregnancy, which meant Xavier spent most of his time returning to the Sutton estate as well.
Summer cast a cold, fleeting glance in his direction, then looked away and turned to head inside.
Xavier caught up in three quick strides, walking shoulder to shoulder with her.
Summer frowned and stepped away, creating distance between them. "Xavier, you are a married man. Please keep a ten-foot distance from me. I don't want to get dragged into your drama."
Xavier's face darkened with frustration. "..."
