The officers had arrived with a full escort of marked cars and uniforms, causing quite a scene. Their dramatic entrance had drawn a massive crowd of onlookers, some of whom were already recording on their phones.
Summer glanced at Silas, and then at Heath, who wasn't wearing any sort of disguise.
Her brow furrowed in deep concern.
She was terrified of dragging them into her mess.
Silas was the CEO of Sinclair Group, a massive target for anyone looking to drag him down—especially Xavier. If the press spun a wild story out of this, Sinclair stock would absolutely tank by morning.
Then there was Heath. As an A-list celebrity, his every move was scrutinized. If he got caught up in a police raid, he would be plastered across every tabloid front page within hours.
Summer stood up decisively, her voice icy. "I will cooperate with your investigation, but you need to clarify the situation to the people outside. I am simply answering questions. I am not a criminal."
"This is not an arrest. If your grandstanding damages the reputations of me or my friends, I will hold you legally accountable."
Silas stood up right behind her, locking eyes with the lead officer. "Explain the situation."
"Well, sir..." The lead officer shifted uncomfortably.
Lance rose from his seat and flashed his credentials. After verifying the ID, the lead officer immediately snapped a crisp salute, which Lance returned.
"Give us the short version, Officer. You can omit classified details, of course. We respect protocol."
There was absolutely nothing classified about this case.
They didn't have a shred of evidence linking Summer to the incident.
The only reason they were here was because the victim's husband—Xavier—had called it in. He claimed Summer was the prime suspect and demanded they investigate thoroughly to deliver justice.
The higher-ups were desperate to score points with a billionaire like Xavier, and the officers on the ground were no different.
They knew there was no evidence for an arrest, yet they still showed up in three cruisers, putting on a massive show just to make her look like a hardened criminal to the public.
But they never expected Summer to be friends with Silas Sinclair.
And then there was Lance. When they scanned his ID in the system, his profile was highly classified, listing his rank as Major General.
The lead officer realized they were totally screwed. They had picked a fight with heavyweights, and cold sweat broke out across his forehead.
Lance's gaze was piercing, assessing the officer like a human lie detector. He instantly knew something shady was going on.
They had dared to harass the woman his best friend was clearly falling for.
For the sake of Silas's future happiness, Lance knew he had to step up and handle this.
He pulled out a nondescript black phone and dialed a number. "Hey, Miller. What are you doing? Eating? Glad you still have an appetite."
"Me? I'm back in Empire City."
"You want to buy me dinner? Sure, no time like the present. Let's do it right now, at the main precinct."
With that, Lance hung up the phone.
"Don't worry, Summer. With Silas and me here, no one is going to bully or frame you." Lance's eyes cut like daggers as he stared down the trembling police officers.
"Thank you, Lance," Summer said, deeply grateful.
