Xavier took a deep breath. "Summer, when I asked you before if you knew Zane Brooks, why did you lie and say you didn't?"
Summer looked at him like he was an absolute lunatic. "Who lied to you? I genuinely don't know him. Who is he?"
Xavier's pupils trembled, and even his voice shook. "You don't know him?"
Summer looked at him with a mix of innocence, confusion, and deep suspicion—the exact way you'd look at a total psycho.
Did she really not know?
Did she have amnesia, or had she simply forgotten?
Did she forget him completely?
The moment that realization hit, Xavier let out a tragic, hollow laugh. He stumbled back two steps as if he'd been struck by a physical blow, looking more unhinged than ever.
Seeing this, Summer immediately slid into the driver's seat, started the engine without a second's hesitation, and sped out of the parking garage.
In the rearview mirror, she saw Xavier standing frozen, staring at the spot where her car had been. His eyes were filled with an agonizing mix of sorrow, devastation, and absolute misery.
"Psycho," Summer muttered under her breath, pulling her eyes away from the mirror.
When her peripheral vision caught the photo album sitting on the passenger seat, her heart sank.
If what Xavier said was true.
Then it was obvious. Lilith was the one who hired the thief. Stealing the cash and jewelry was just a smokescreen; getting her hands on the photo album was the real goal.
But why did she want the album?
It seemed she needed to keep a much closer eye on Lilith from now on.
As soon as Summer got home, she told Miles all about it.
Miles pondered for a moment before speaking. "Summer, did you know that Xavier had someone who saved his life when he was younger?"
Summer shook her head. She had no idea.
Xavier had been lying to her from day one, so naturally, he had never opened up to her. There were countless things she didn't know about his past.
"The girl who saved him was from St. Jude's Children's Home. He was convinced Lilith was his savior because of her face. Do you think it's possible he simply got the wrong person?"
"Or maybe Lilith deliberately conned him? And the person who actually saved him was... you."
