"Psycho," Summer muttered, taking the flowers with a completely deadpan expression.
Xavier stared at her, both shocked and ecstatic. He never imagined she would actually accept his flowers.
"Summer, did you remember something?"
"No," Summer replied. She carried the bouquet over to a nearby trash can and chucked it inside without a second of hesitation.
Thud.
Xavier felt like it wasn't the flowers she had just thrown away, but his beating heart.
His heart was shattered into a million bloody, agonizing pieces, the pain so sharp he could barely breathe.
Yet a second later, he forced a desperate smile onto his face. "It's okay, Summer. I'll bring you more tomorrow."
Summer looked at him in total exasperation and sighed. "Xavier, are you completely out of your mind? I don't want to see you. Just looking at you makes me want to puke."
Summer turned and got into her car. Xavier immediately tried to step forward, but the security guards blocked him. "Sir, if you keep harassing our boss, we're calling the cops."
Summer started the engine and rolled down her window. "Good job, guys. You're both getting a raise tomorrow."
"Thank you, Director Vance!"
"Don't worry, Boss! As long as we're here, we won't let creeps get within ten feet of you!"
Xavier was speechless.
If these two men hadn't just scored points with Summer—and if he wasn't terrified of making her hate him even more—he would have made them disappear from Empire City by midnight.
The moment Summer drove out of the parking garage, she received a call from Bennett.
He was asking her to come back to the Sutton residence for dinner.
The Sutton family dining room.
"Summer, come try Scarlett's cooking."
