"The old professor?" Summer raised an eyebrow. "Is that what you call our mentor? Hasn't he disciplined you for that?"
Gavin laughed playfully. "A certain someone is young, beautiful, bursting with energy, and absolutely reckless. Even our mentor couldn't control him. He wanted to discipline him but didn't have the energy, so he dumped him on me for rehabilitation. Though, the results haven't been great so far."
Jude clicked his tongue. "We really can't move past the 'young and beautiful' part, can we?"
Summer and Gavin replied in unison, "No."
Jude deadpanned.
After lunch, Summer prepared to head to the police station. Gavin stopped her and tossed her his car keys.
Summer caught them, flashed a smile of thanks, and hurried off.
At the police station.
The officer handling her case explained that the culprit confessed to smashing her car because he had just gone through a brutal breakup. His mental state was awful, he had been drinking, and he just snapped.
And the car Summer drove happened to be the exact same model his ex-girlfriend drove.
Summer thought it was pure insanity. "Just because of that? Then why didn't he go smash his girlfriend's car?"
The officer looked equally speechless. "He said he couldn't bear to."
Summer was at a loss for words. What a hopeless romantic idiot.
Summer met the man who smashed her car. He was dripping in international luxury brands, with a watch worth tens of thousands of dollars on his wrist. Clearly, he was not short on cash.
No wonder he had the nerve to casually wreck a car worth hundreds of thousands.
The man's attitude was highly apologetic. He agreed to cover all the damages and offered an additional fifty thousand dollars as compensation for emotional distress, begging Summer not to press charges.
His ex-girlfriend had also shown up at the station, pleading relentlessly with Summer.
Summer needed the money right now, so she signed the settlement agreement, took the cash, and left.
After Summer departed, Chief Harrison personally made a phone call.
"Silas, my subordinates mentioned you filed a report last night. Since you made the call personally, I figured I should let you know that the case you reported has been resolved."
As she pondered, Summer answered the phone with a smile. "Good afternoon, Mr. Sinclair."
"Good afternoon, Summer." Silas's deep, slightly raspy voice carried through the speaker. "The police station just called me. Is your case settled?"
Summer finally understood. So that was it.
And simultaneously, another puzzle piece fell into place.
No wonder the police had caught the culprit so quickly.
It was because of Silas.
Silas had made the police report himself. The station fast-tracked it as a favor to him, which was why they updated him the moment it was closed.
She was riding on his coattails.
Realizing this, Summer chuckled apologetically. "Mr. Sinclair, it seems I benefited from your influence. That's the only reason the police handled it so fast. Now I owe you another favor. Looks like one dinner won't be enough to pay you back."
Silas's soft laugh came through the line. "If one isn't enough, then we'll make it two."
