Odette’s POV
“What do you mean, Grayson refused? Grayson wasn’t supposed to have been here at all,” I said to the group of Elders who had pulled me aside, privately, to tell me about their meeting with Lillian.
“He stormed in,” the Head Elder said, his voice curt, revealing his irritation. “We were only able to plead with the Luna Princess for a moment. Though we felt we were being somewhat effective, she is stubborn. When Grayson arrived, we had no chance. He is absolutely refusing to be swayed, and he was furious we had gone to speak with Lillian behind his back.”
I crossed my arms, my own annoyance breaking my sweet façade. There was too much riding on this, and they were wasting the few opportunities we had to turn things in the correct direction. “How could you let him know you were speaking to her? You were supposed to speak with her privately.”
“He must be having her watched,” another Elder said. “Her life has been threatened before. He has likely started taking precautions for her safety.”
“We aren’t threatening her,” the Head Elder said. “We are simply trying to get her to see reason.”
They were failing at both. With a deep inhale and exhale, I attempted to regain my composure. “My adopted family is not going to be happy with this turn of events. This alliance could benefit both of our packs a great deal, but refusal, at the same time, would not be looked kindly upon. This rejection will be seen as an insult.”
The Elders glanced at each other, their anxiety clear in their eyes. My vague threats made them nervous.
Good. They should. I always get what I want.
“I will do my best to try to talk them out of any harsh measures, of course,” I said, pulling back on the mask of sweetness that had always served me well. “But… they care about me so much. They wouldn’t want to see me being mistreated like this.”
One of the Elders paled so quickly, he looked like he might faint.
“No offense is meant,” said another, in haste.
I rubbed my forehead. “I tire. Whatever you can do to fix this, please do so. I need some rest.”
“Of course,” the Head Elder said. “Please get some rest, Miss Odette. We will continue to work to make this right.”
“Thank you,” I said, though I didn’t really trust them to see this through. They had already revealed their ineptitude.
Well, if I wanted something done, I had to handle it myself.
Turning from them, I left the room to find Prince Reginald standing in the hallway for me. At the sight of me, he held out his arm for me. Immediately, I wrapped my arm around his.
“You look tired,” he said.
I wilted further, playing up the weakness. “I am. I know the Elders are trying to push for this alliance, but they are meeting walls at every turn.”
He hummed.
I leaned into him. “Grayson continues to refuse the alliance, and even Lillian can’t see the light. She is betraying her pack, choosing her own selfish desires over the good of her pack. It’s such a shame… If only she could see the

importance of this marriage.”

Reginald frowned, but didn’t reply.
I looked up at him, confused. In the past, he’d always jumped to my defense, not able to offer enough support quickly enough. Now, he hesitated, and it didn’t make any sense. Where had this change come from in him?
“Reggie? You are as upset about this as me, aren’t you?”
“I suppose,” he said, not at all convincing. “But… I’m starting to wonder if this is the right way to handle this alliance.”
My brow pulled together. “What do you mean?”
