Odette’s POV

I noticed, as I was shuffling away, embarrassed and furious by Grayson’s rejection, that Ophelia’s face was mirroring the anger inside of my heart. Her face reflected what I could not sure, for the sake of my reputation and my façade. The look made me curious though, and new plans started formulating in my mind.

After the court meeting, as everyone was shuffling out of the room, I avoided Grayson and Lillian, but stepped forward into Ophelia’s path.

“Odette? What is it?” she asked. Some time had passed so she had attempted to school her face, but the anger still shone through her eyes and one, lone, twitching eyebrow.

“Dear sister, I was hoping we could talk for a moment alone,” I said. “Unless you were in a hurry?”

I glanced around, but I already knew she had nowhere to be. Her schedule looked similar to mine, with social events peppered here and there. Ophelia sneaked in some time at the training grounds as well, but she had already been there once this morning.

“I can talk,” Ophelia said, frowning.

“We haven’t had a lot of time to talk, just you and me,” I said. “That’s my fault. But we should fix that.”

She nodded, seemingly open to my words, for which I was glad. Not because I cared overly for our sisterly bond, but because if she was willing to accept my apology, she’d be more open to what else I had to say.

I gestured to one of the sitting rooms up the hallway and Ophelia started walking there. I joined her at her side.

“You’ve been busy spending time with Grayson,” she said.

“Yes. The Lycan Kingdom was hoping for a political marriage between Grayson and me. I suppose there is still some hope for it, but it isn’t easy.”

Ophelia would greatly benefit from a match like that. As my sister, she would rise in power as I did, something I knew she would be well aware of. Because of that knowledge, I had guessed a lot of her anger regarding Grayson’s dismissal of me had to do with the potential loss of her own power. She always had a soft spot for Grayson, but I didn’t think jealousy would be enough of a drive for her.

In the end, what ambitious young woman wouldn’t place power above all?

We entered the sitting room, taking a seat in two tall-back chairs that faced each other on other side of a small table.

“He keeps choosing her,” Ophelia said. “Even since before you arrived. I’ve been trying to talk him out of it, trying to get him to see her for the greedy, power-hungry leech she is. But at every turn, he chooses Lillian. It doesn’t make any sense.”

“It is confusing,” I admitted. “She is a disgraced Gamma’s daughter. She offers him no power, no alliance. She is decent with the bow, I suppose, but her wolf’s aura isn’t particularly strong. Do you think she has some kind of other hold on him?”

“I can’t imagine what it would be,” Ophelia said. “Grayson is strong-willed, a good leader. He wouldn’t allow himself to be easily manipulated.”

“He is strong but a man’s heart is always susceptible under the right pressures,” I said.

Ophelia glowered. “She’s a slut, for sure. I can’t imagine any other reason he would want to be with her.”

should be able to break free of that fantasy soon enough then, when he’s had his fill.”

“I thought that too, at first,” Ophelia said. “But it’s been too long now. I’m starting to think he is ever going to break himself free of her games.”
