Chapter 168
Grayson’s POV-

The assassin was waiting for me in one of the interrogation rooms. He had been held in the dungeon while I’d pleased my wife. I’d wanted him to see the kind of place he would be spending the rest of his life in, to help break him a little. But now that I wanted to speak to him, the interrogation room was better.
The room was without windows, or amenities. It had a card table and two folding chairs. The attacker was handcuffed and chained to the floor, but he had been given one of the chairs to sit down on. When I entered the room, Prime Beta was there near a two-way mirror, arms crossed.
The would-be assassin had held his head low, though he looked up as I entered. Fear entered his eyes.
Good.
This man had watched me tear out the throat of his associate. He had to know I would quickly and easily do the same to him. He’d already been dead if Lily hadn’t spoken out to leave him alive. She’d been right of course, we needed answers. But even now, the desire to kill this man was strong.
No one threatens my mate.
Growling deeply, I allowed my furious aura to fill the small room. As an Alpha and a Lycan, I exuded power when I wanted too. Often I held it back, preferring to be underestimated or to be seen as diplomatic rather than forceful. Right now, I let the full force of my power loose, wanting this man to tremble, intimidated and fearful.
Since I couldn’t kill him yet, his fear brought me satisfaction. It was the least of what he deserved for what he had attempted to do.
“You know why I am here,” I said.
“I can’t tell you anything,” the attacker said. “I’ll be killed.”
“And you think I will be kinder? Or are you hoping I would give you a quicker death than that would?” I stepped closer toward him. I started to shift, just enough to add some height and for my canines to extend, my teeth to flash. “I killed your friend quickly, but I know how to make you suffer. You will not receive any sympathy from me for what you tried to do to my mate.”
“It wasn’t personal,” he said quickly, his eyes wild. “It was just a job.”
“You aren’t a rogue,” I said, realizing. “You are a hitman.”
His gaze dropped. “I prefer the term mercenary…”
Some relief filled me. The rogues hadn’t broken the agreement, so it was still intact. The Council wouldn’t be able to use this against them.
But that made me wonder… if it wasn’t the rogues who arranged for this attack on Lillian, then who did? My mind immediately went to the very same Elders. They had been furious that I had made this agreement, ruining whatever horrible scheme they had for the borderlands and the rogue.
Had they thought by hurting Lillian that I would immediately turn my ire on the rogues without even looking into it?
Unfortunately, if I had been too late, and if she had died, that might have been exactly what happened. I would have raged, and none would have been safe from my fury.

I needed to be more careful, to make sure I have all the facts before acting.
But I also needed to make certain Lillian was more properly protected.
I refocused on the mercenary in front of me. “Who hired you?”
He swallowed hard.
“You can either rot in the dungeon or I will remove the sinew from your throat one strand at a time, I said, growling. “Answer me. Now. Who hired you?”
He hesitated. “She… No, I can’t say.”
She? There were no female Elders yet, so unless they hired someone as a representative, they might be in the clear,
“Her name,” I growled.
