Grayson’s POV-

“p-prince Grayson, please! The Elder Council is in the middle of a meeting,” said the nervous servant, trying to block my path as I stormed forward toward the Elders’ meeting room.

I cast him a cruel glare, wordlessly telling him that he had better out of the way if he knew what was good for him.

He swallowed hard and stepped to the side.

I brushed past him to the double doors, which I pushed open, breaking the lock that had been holding them closed. A pair of guards just inside turned to look at me, their hands going for the hilts of their swords. Seeing who I was, they immediately stopped themselves.

The council, who had been arguing about who knew what silenced themselves, turning their outrage toward me, at first, until they too realized who I was.

A couple of them had been standing. They sat down.

The Head Elder rose behind his desk as I moved down toward them, entering the circle their desks had created.

“Prince Grayson,” the Head Elder said. “You seem to be making a habit of arriving unannounced.”

“I do what I have to,” I snapped. “When it comes to defending my wife, you leave me no choice. First, you attempt to manipulate her. Now, even in the wake of her near-assassination, you spread unsubstantiated rumors about her.”

The Head Elder glanced around to the others of the Council. “My dear prince, none of us have any idea what you mean.”

“Enough bullshit,” I said, with a growl underlining the words. My wolf was pacing in the forefront of my mind, just begging to be released. An insult to our mate was something that should not be taken lightly, especially when she had nearly died already. Anyone could hear those insults and run with them, using it as an excuse to continue to try to hurt her.

The Head Elder sat down. “I take it that you mean ‘omen of misfortune.’ Yes, we have all heard the title, and perhaps a few of us have repeated it. Only because we believe it though. Not because we have started it.”

“Repeating it is bad enough,” I said. “But I don’t believe you. You have every reason to want to spread that lie.”

“We didn’t start it,” said another Elder, to my left. “But can you fault us for believing it? Her presence is the only thing holding you back from making the kind of alliance that could protect this kingdom for centuries to come.”

“Enough,” I bellowed. “My decisions will not be questioned, and I will not allow you to undermine my marriage or my mate’s happiness with these blatant falsehoods. You will stop spreading these lies, whether you started them or not, or I will take matters into my hands.” I narrowed my gaze. “Your advice might no longer be

welcomed when I am King.”

Some of the Council straightened.

The Head Elder frowned deeply. “You would threaten to disband us? The Council of Elders has existed since before even the monarchy took control of this pack, this kingdom. You do not understand that which you threaten.”

“I understand very well,” I said. “And I mean every threat. Leave my wife alone, or I don’t care what hell I bring.”

The Council looked like they wanted to argue more, but were holding themselves back.

We were at a standstill then – an unhappy one, with neither side the winner. So long as they kept from continued spread of this vile rumor, I supposed I would be satisfied.

But I didn’t fully believe that they hadn’t started these rumors.

If they didn’t though, who did? And for what purpose?

I had promised Lily that her nightmare was coming to an end. Now I worried that such a promise was premature.

With a curse, I turned and stormed out of the Council’s meeting room in much the same way I had entered it.
