“He has a sarcastic way about him,” I said, “But I do think his intention was genuine. I know he supports us.”

“I don’t believe that,” Grayson said. “He’s had his eye on you since he saw you.’

“Then why would he say such nice things about us?” I asked.

“He’s attempting to mock me.”

“He teases, but I don’t think he’d go that far,” I said.

“You don’t know him like I do.”

“He’s my friend, Grayson, and I have so few of them. Please try to get along, for my sake if not for your own.

Grayson looked at me for a long time, searching my face for something I did not know. I kept my emotions open, hiding nothing. I truly just wanted us all to get along. With a sigh, he leaned in and kissed my cheek.

“You are too kind for this world,” he said. “How you haven’t been corrupted yet, I don’t know. But I’m grateful for it, and I’ll do my best to protect your pure heart.”
