Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 189

Chapter 189

Surely you don’t think I am the assassin?” I gasped.

“No, but -”

“Please, brother. I know she is a traitor, but she is still our sister. I love her dearly. I want to make certain she received the gifts I had sent, and that she is not being mistreated at all. I want to see with my own eyes.”

A muscle in Prime Beta’s jaw ticked. “She might try to lie to you.”

“I will not be swayed by her lies. She betrayed the kingdom and betrayed us all. I only want to speak with her. I miss her so dearly. I love her. And… things were bad between us when she was accused. I want to fix things, for both of us.”

Prime Beta frowned, but I could tell he was softening. He was going to allow this.

“Very well, but only briefly,” he said, and I smiled.

“Thank you, brother.”

He personally escorted me down into the dungeons, which were even less appealing than I had imagined. So dark and dank, oddly humid. Water seemed to be dripping somewhere, and when coupled with a nearly consistent groaning from a prisoner, the entire experience was severely offputting.

I would do what I had to, though.

My brother led me into the protected cells, where one of the guards allowed me inside. He closed the door behind me, partially for my own protection, he said. I didn’t mind, not wanting my conversation to be overheard.

Ophelia was reading a book I had sent while sitting on the plush chair I had insisted be delivered. I even had to pay a few bribes to get that down here. I hoped she could appreciate that, and that these gifts would grease the wheels of what I needed to have happen here.

She looked up and seeing me, huffed an exasperated sigh. “How were you allowed down here?”

“Our brother loves us very much,” I said. “All I had to do was tell him how much I missed you.”

“Cute,” Ophelia grumbled. “What do you really want?”

“I wanted to make sure my gifts were being well received.”

“I assumed these were your apologies for letting me take the fall,” Ophelia said. “Let me tell you, it will take more than a comfortable chair to make me forgive you.”

“It was hardly my fault,” I said, feigning hurt. “We shouldn’t forget who is really to blame. Lillian.”

“She’s tougher than she looks,” Ophelia said. “If you are here for help, I don’t have anything left to give.”

“Sure you do,” I said.

“Well, maybe I don’t want to. I’ve already lost my freedom.”
