I had no idea where Prince Grayson was, and even if I did, I doubted I’d be allowed directly in to see him. I was nothing but a low-ranking member of the court. For me to try to speak to the prince directly would require appointments and introductions. There was hardly time for that.

But while I couldn’t go see the prince uninvited, I knew Prime Beta would be. Asking the servants I knew, I was able to track Prime Beta down as he delivered the prince’s messages.

In the hallway, I ran to him, grabbed his arm, stopping him.

“What is the meaning of this?” he asked me. We weren’t close. I couldn’t remember if I had ever spoken to him directly. Most often when I encountered him, Lillian was there and doing most, if not all, of the talking. But this was too important to be nervous about.

“I received an urgent message from Ophelia in the dungeons,” I said. “It’s important, and it’s about Lily. I need to talk to the prince at once.”

“Ophelia cannot be trusted,” he said. “And she should not be allowed to send correspondence. I will have to change the guard again.”

“Please!” He was missing the point, big time. “I need to talk to Grayson. Where is he?”

Prime Beta narrowed his gaze. “Show me the letter.”

I felt protective of it, and not knowing Prime Beta or his loyalty to Lily, I was hesitant to hand it over. “You are Ophelia’s brother.”

“My loyalties are only to the prince,” he said flatly.

“I don’t know that. Take me to Grayson and I’ll show him the letter. No one else.”

He narrowed his eyes at me, but I narrowed my eyes right back.

“Fine,” he said. “To prove to you that my loyalty should not be questioned. But this had better not be a hoax or you will have an enemy of me.”

“Lily is my closest friend,” I insisted. “I wouldn’t lie about something like this.”

Prime Beta searched my face for a moment, but then nodded. “Follow me.”

He led me down the hallway through unfamiliar corridors where I had never before had reason to enter.
