Grayson’s POV

“Lily?” I called out.
Shifted, Lillian had torn her way through all of the rogues in an impressive show of strength and violence. Her wolf was on another level, nearly as strong as my own. I had no idea how that could be possible, but it filled me with pride. My mate was a protector, too. A warrior. Capable and deadly. Beautiful.
But right now, she also looked lost. Her head was up, looking out the mouth of the cave, her wolfy/ears turned toward the forest.
She didn’t respond to my voice.
I walked closer. “Lily, can you hear me?”
Lillian’s wolf had long been suppressed, but must have broken ree in rising danger. The wolf had already given signs of her presence, in flashes of strength and destruction. Now, the wolf was here, free, and looking like it wasn’t ready to give up its power so easily.
“Don’t lose control, Lily,” I said. “Do not give yourself over entirely. Don’t lose yourself to your wolf. You are still needed here. I need you here.”
The wolf looked back at me, and in it’s dark eyes, for a flash, I could see recognition, like Lily was looking out.
Come back to me, I prayed.
But too soon, that recognition dimmed, the wolf taking over.
I had seen this before. In times of loss, even strong werewolves would lose themselves to their wolves, to the wild, finding it easier to live in the forest as a wolf than to try to endure the turmoil that a man must survive.
Lillian was facing that choice now, seeing the world through the eyes of a wolf for the first time. She had suffered as a human. At times, I had added to that suffering. But not anymore. Things would be different moving forward.
She was the woman I loved, and I wanted to take care of her, to right all the wrongs of our past. To show the whole world that this woman was my mate by choice, not simply by convenience.
“Lily,” I said calmly. “Marry me.”
She froze.
“For real this time. A wedding where we invite the whole of the kingdom, for everyone to see and to share in this.” I gestured between us. “Please, Lilly… come back to me.”
The wolf looked down. It chuffed and stamped at the floor of the cave. Lily was fighting, and I knew she was fighting hard. Her wolf was so powerful, so strong. Lily was strong too, but had no idea how to fight. She hadn’t been raised with a wolf like the rest of us, she hadn’t had time to learn how to fight the wild, to control the wolf’s impulses.
I tried to help Lily, pushing some strength through our bond, but I was weak in this moment, still wounded by the silver. My help was minimal, which was frustrating as the hells.
Especially when Lily’s wolf turned toward the cave entrance and bolted out of it.
I cursed under my breath and called for my own wolf. Gods, shifting hurt, the silver wound in my back transferring onto my wolf, tearing through flesh and fur. But both my wolf and I were in agreement not to lose

Lillian, no matter the pain to ourselves.
Shifted, I raced out of the cave, pushing my body hard to keep up with Lillian.
She was fast.
If I hadn’t been injured, I could have matched her pace, but as I was, I had to work harder to keep up.
She was running farther from the road that would take us back to the city. This way lead us deeper into the mountain, the forest, the wilds.
She was being reckless, taking herself far too close to bear caves and into pre-established territories of wild wolf- packs. I did what I could to run interference for her, placing myself between her and the danger, sending away any potential threats with my Alpha aura before they could even thinking about investigating Lillian’s presence or trying to face her.
Hours later, she was finally starting to slow. My entire body ached, and I didn’t know how much longer I could go. I wouldn’t lose her, though. No matter what, I wouldn’t lose her.
As her wolf slowed, tiring, my hope returned. Lily might be able to find the strength to take over when the wolf needed rest.
Eventually she stopped entirely, and sat down in a grassy patch among a crop of trees. Slowly, I moved out of the brush to approach her. She looked up at me cautiously, but didn’t make a move away as I approached. Emboldened, I nudged my head against her muzzle. She lightly barked and leaned into me in return.
All good signs.
