Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 202

Chapter 202

Lillian’s POV

As Grayson slumped, I moved in an instant, catching him around the waist and holding him as best I could to keep from falling.

The doctor set aside the flower and hurried forward. “What is this?”

“Silver poisoning, “I told him. “He’s been stabbed with a silver dagger.”

Many things happened at once in the next moments. The doctor rushed into the hallway and called for the help of a few nurses and other doctors. A nurse rolled in a gurney and everything happened in a blur. Grayson was taken from my arms, lifted onto it, and then wheeled away from me.

Panic flooded through me. We had waited too long to get Grayson’s wound treated. He had acted so strong that I had thought it mustn’t have been that bad. But no, that was just a reflection of Grayson’s will and toughness. He must have been in so much pain through this entire ordeal, but still he prioritized me and my brother above himself.

My heart ached. Gods, he had to be okay. We had only just connected in life and love. I couldn’t lose him now.

“We’re taking him into surgery,” one of the nurses said. “The prince is strong. He will fight this.”

“I know,” I told them.

For a time, I waited in Ronan’s room, but soon, being with him, overcome with the sadness of my brother getting worse and now my mate in danger, I couldn’t stand to be there anymore.

I whispered a quiet apology to my brother and then left the room, moving to the waiting room where I could sit and be alone with my thoughts.

Yet I wasn’t alone for long. Soon, Prime Beta and Josephine came rushing in. Spotting me, they came to me.

“What’s going on?” Josie asked.

I told them as much as I could, explaining the attack and Calvin being stabbed, when we fell into the river, and then were set upon my Calvin and the others. I said nothing about the love confession or the private time I spent connecting with Grayson, but I did explain about my wolf, my power, and how I killed Calvin and the others.

“Self-defense,” Josie said. “Anyone could see that.”

Josephine was compassionate and understanding, but Prime Beta’s face was hardened stone, unreadable and entirely unexpressive.

“Please excuse me,” he said and turned. He walked right out of the hospital ward the way he had come in, moving like a man on a mission.

I traded confused glances with Josie. “What was that about?”

Josie shrugged. “I haven’t the slightest idea.”

Prime Beta’s POV

The attack on Prince Grayson and Luna Princess Lillian told me that my sister Odette’s warning had merit. She had known, from her letter, that danger was stalking Lillian. Likely, she even knew that it was Calvin and the rogues specifically, though hadn’t said that.

Now, I was going to go straight to the source to find answers. I wanted to know exactly how Ophelia knew about the-danger, about Calvin, and what else she knew.

Leaving the hospital ward, I headed straight for the palace, and then went down into the dungeons. I didn’t run, but I moved with purpose, every measured step taking me closer toward my goal.

Ophelia was my family, and my family was my responsibility.

The guards in the dungeons knew me well and let me pass without a word. Even the more vetted guards at Ophelia’s door nodded and let me pass without question. One opened the door for me and I stepped inside.

Ophelia was sitting on her plush chair, reading. She looked up when I walked in.

“I was wondering how long it would take,” she said. “Clara got my message then, and told you about it?”

I studied her. This being looked and talked like my sister, but the sister I knew would have never betrayed Grayson and the royal family. When had she become so corrupted? And why hadn’t I noticed the change?

“Did my warning arrive in time? Was Grayson able to save Lillian? Or are you here to tell me she’s dead,” Ophelia continued, tilting her head to the side. She seemed so… unaffected. Like either answer would satisfy her curiosity but she would remain otherwise unmoved.

“The Luna Princess lives,” I told her. “But Grayson’s life is in danger now.”

Finally, she showed some emotion, paling. At least she still valued Grayson’s life, even if she cared little for his
