Lillian’s POV

Josie having overheard, immediately pulled me into a tight hug. “Thank you,” she whispered to me. “You saved my brother.”

“I didn’t do anything,” I said. “I gathered some moss and kept him warm.”

“You protected him, fought for him, and worked to keep him with us, to bring him home,” Josie said. “Do not undersell all that you have done.”

“It doesn’t feel like enough,” I said. “Grayson is still in there, fighting for his life.”

“He is fighting for his life, I don’t want to devalue his effort,” the doctor said, overhearing me. “But he is winning. The prince is an Alpha and a Lycan. He is one of the strongest werewolves in all of the kingdoms. And, because of your assistance, Lillian, he will survive this.”

Tears of relief filled my eyes. Clara and Josie surrounded me, and in the circle of our friendship, I allowed that emotion to overwhelm me for a time.

When I had finished crying, Josie handed me a handkerchief. She too had tears in her eyes but was able to blink

them back.

Not long after that, the King and Queen arrived. They moved with purpose, walking straight to the reception. The nurses there nearly tripped over themselves to accommodate them, taking them back at once.

It made sense that the King and Queen of the kingdom would be able to see their son first, but I couldn’t help but feel jealousy. Grayson was my husband and the man I loved. I wanted to be there with him. Instead, it seemed, I was third on the list of important visitors, and only two were allowed in at a time.

I tried to be patient, but I struggled, pacing back and forth across the length of the waiting room. Josie and Clara walked with me for a time. Clara sat first, and Josie second, both of them taking to watching me rather than walking themselves.

I kept checking the clock on the wall, but the more I checked, the slower time seemed to move. Five minutes felt like an eternity. Surely I would die of old age before I would be allowed to see my husband. My mate. The love of my life.

Funny how easy it was to accept him as all of those things now that I knew I had his love. In the past, I would have agonized, worried that my affections were unreturned. But that had been a baseless worry. I didn’t know the moment Grayson had fallen in love with me, but he was here with me now. We were in this feeling of love together.

I just needed him to be okay.

The doctor had said that he would recover, I tried to remind myself of that. But it was difficult. Ronan was already in such dire circumstances, with doubts that the flower would even work. I couldn’t lose them both. I didn’t want to lose either one.

Eventually, the King and Queen reemerged from the back hallways. The Queen walked out without saying a word, but the King, seeing me, came over to speak with me.

He stepped into my pacing path and I stopped. He placed his hands on my upper arms, holding me in place.

“Lillian. I can’t thank you enough for what you’ve done.”

“You don’t have to thank me,” I said. “I only did what I needed to.”

(m told it was your intervention that saved my errant son’s life,” the King said. Some regret shone on his face.” To speak truthfully, I hadn’t thought much of your relationship with my son at first. We saw you as a means to an end, a way to ensure an heir before my son died or was lost in his coma. But now, I know you can be trusted. I think you might even be good for him.” He squeezed my arms. “Take good care of him, will you?”

“I promise,” I said.

The King smiled, and I did a little too, in reply.

Nearby the doctor cleared his throat. “Luna Princess. Prince Grayson is asking for you.”

I looked back to the King. “I have to -”
