Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 213

Chapter 213

Lillian’s POV

As my doctor, the man had no choice but to comply. The confidentiality between a patient and doctor exceeded even the loyalty between a man and their prince.

“I won’t tell him,” the doctor said. “But I encourage you to please do so. He deserves to know.”

I needed to talk to Grayson about many other things first. Telling him I was pregnant would only complicate the issues for now. I still had no idea why he would agree to give the flower tonic to Odette over Ronan, when he had promised to do all he could to help Ronan survive.

“I’ll consider it. Thank you, doctor,” I said, dismissing him.

He nodded and left the room, leaving me alone with Teacher, who watched me with a critical expression and a discerning gaze.

“Grayson’s waiting for you,” Teacher said. “He wanted to wait in here, but I thought you might need a minute to recover before seeing him. Especially with this news.”

“Thank you,” I said. I was glad to have a minute. If I woke up and saw Grayson first, I didn’t know what I would do. My heart was torn. I loved him so much, and I wanted to hear his explanation for what happened. But I needed a moment to recover first. To give my wolf and I time to mourn alone.

Teacher was a quiet, calming presence. Since he had appeared in my life, he’d always been more of a father figure than my father ever was.

We sat in the silence for a while.

I placed my hands over my stomach. It was still flat, still early in the pregnancy. If the doctor hadn’t said anything, I would have no idea. But it was amazing, life was growing inside of me, right here.

It was also terrifying. What kind of world would I be bringing this child into?

“Grayson insisted this was a communication error,” Teacher said. “I’m inclined to believe him. He didn’t seem to be attempting to deceive me.”

“A miscommunication error that led to my brother’s death,” I said, with pain tearing at my heart. For the sake of the baby, I tried to breathe through it, to stay calm. But it was so difficult. I felt like my insides were trying to rip themselves apart.

“I don’t want to blame Grayson,” I said. “I know… it can’t be his fault.”

“It’s not yours either,” Teacher said, already suspecting my new line of thinking.

“My father only gave him that poison because of me, because I wouldn’t listen to him.”

“Then this is your father’s fault, and no one else’s. Not yours. Not Grayson’s.”

Closing my eyes, I silently promised to always protect my child in a way I wasn’t able to protect my brother. At once, I knew what I had to do, and it broke my heart all over again.

“Are there rumors again?” I asked. “I lost control of my wolf. My brother died. Odette was poisoned. Am I still being called an ill omen?”

Teacher was quiet a moment, like he didn’t want to tell me the truth. But in that moment, I had my answer. If it wasn’t true, he would have easily told me so.

“Do you think… I’m in danger?” I asked.

You’ve always been in danger here,” Teacher said. “The question is, do you still trust Grayson to protect you?”

Grayson was a good protector, always putting his life on the line for mine. If he knew about the baby, he would probably do so to an even greater capacity. If the danger is vast, he could even die.

He almost died once before.

His instinct to protect ran deep. There would be no changing it.

There was only one way I could stop him from running headlong into danger. And that was to take myself out of it.

“I know what I have to do,” I said. “Can you get Grayson for me?”

Teacher nodded. He placed his hand on my shoulder and gave it a squeeze before walking out the door.

The seconds ticked by, each feeling like an eternity. I had suffered similar grief in the past, after losing my mother. I knew what to expect, knew this would hurt me. I knew recovery was an illusion, that I would carry this with me now like a weighted bag.

Eventually, I would become accustomed to the weight and would carry it better. But it was a long process to get
