Chapter 222

possible, his expression became even blanker.

Grayson’s POV

A flicker of feeling came to life inside of me, seeing Lillian again, but I did my best to quash it, to cover it with ice. and snow until it was numb again.

Lily happened upon me by chance. She had not come here to see me, to save me, or to rekindle anything between/ us. Her defensive stance and the way she kept backing up told me that.

My foolish heart, that had held on hope for so long, ached again, just as it did every time I thought of her. Seeing her in the flesh made it worse.

Especially knowing what I knew. That she had suffered a miscarriage when her brother had died.

To her, I must have been nothing but a reminder of her tragedy. For her sake, I would attempt to make this as painless as possible.

To spare her, I turned my attention to the member of the Blood Fang that I had managed to take down before the others fled. Kneeling down beside the body, I searched it, looking for clues. In a pocket, I founded a folded up piece of paper. A note, written in hasty scrawl.

“What does it say?” Lillian asked. She hadn’t left yet, which was a surprise. Perhaps the rogues were related to her mission? Whatever that was.

I read through the note quickly, then cursed. “They are plotting against the King’s life. They claim to have someone on the inside. This group was to be an outside distraction.” I stood. “I have to get back to the palace.”

“You say that so calmly.”

When I dared to look at her, I saw her eyes wide with shock. She must have taken the news with surprise, but I was reserved to it. Every day I handled threats to the King’s life, as well as to my own.

“The past five years have not been kind to my kingdom,” I told her. “I have to go.”

“I’ll go with you,” she said. “You could need help.”

There was no time to argue. “Suit yourself.”

I shifted into my wolf and she shifted into hers. My wolf wanted to howl in mourning, to see his mate but be unable to feel the bond, but I held him back. Lillian didn’t need to know how much we suffered.

Instead, I took off running, ignoring the satisfying familiarity of having Lillian following me.
