Chapter 232

Lillian’s POV
We moved farther out, into the nearby field, where I huddled the children against me. Grayson stood beside us, watching protectively. He had already used his resources to call for the fire department, and my team had been alerted too. But both would be too late to spare the beautiful little cottage, which was totally engulfed with fire.
The fire had moved too quickly to be natural. Grayson’s first guess had to have been correct. This had to have been an arson, with someone using something like gasoline as an accelerant. But who would have wanted to do this? Who even knew I was here?
I’d always been careful when traveling to and from the palace. I’d taken steps to make sure I hadn’t been followed here, to protect my children.
I glanced at Grayson, his face glowing in the light of the fire. His frown deep, his brow furrowed with anger. He would have been careful, too, wouldn’t he? Or had he lead someone curious and ill intended here from the palace?
Was it possible that despite my best efforts to protect my children from the dangers of court life, that danger had still found us? Was there no escape from these dangers after all? Had everything I’d done to keep us safe up until this point been for not?
No, I couldn’t believe that. I had kept my children safe through their earliest years. They had been safe. I couldn’t regret the past five years. It was only now, returning here, that I started to feel doubts.
