Looking at me, he schooled his face back into a blank slate. “I was just walking. I didn’t mean to wake you.”
“I was already awake,” I said. Something was clearly bother him. “Come in, let’s talk.”
He hesitated for a moment, but when I opened the door more, enough for him to enter, he nodded and accepted, a hint of relief in his eyes.
Entering the room, he came and we went to the couch, sitting down beside each other. I smooshed the blanket I had been using up against one side, out of the way.
“The kids are asleep,” I said. “We’ll have to keep our voices down.”
He nodded.
I waited, but when he didn’t start speaking right away, I prompted. “Grayson. Please tell me what’s going on.”
He swallowed hard. “You saw the state of my father.”
“Yes,” I said and my heart ached at once for him. My own father had been terrible for most of my life, but my mother had been sweet and kind. I missed her every single day. I had thought the worst thing that could have happened was losing her. Seeing Grayson’s father, I wasn’t so sure that was true anymore.
“He returned to himself today, just for a few minutes, in part. He remembered me, but saw me as a boy. He spoke of my mother as if she was alive.”
Grayson spoke steadily, his body rigid and stoic, but I knew him well enough to know that he was hiding. Lifting a hand, I placed it on his arm.
“I’m sorry,” I said.
“I’m not. Not for that moment. It was so nice to talk to him like the way that it was, even if we had to do it through a filter of twenty years in the past. He said he heard my mother calling for him.”
“Grayson…”
