Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 245

Chapter 245

Lilian’s POV

Exercise was important, especially for the children, so I insisted that they run around the massive lawn for a while, even though they wanted to spend every waking hour outside of their tutoring in their new playroom.

They were playing tag when it happened. Alex was reaching for Madison, who had ducked out of the way. Alex tripped, his knee skidded into a dry patch, some of the skin coming off. He toppled and immediately started to cry,

My heart stopped at the sound, as I rushed over. I inspected the wound, but it was bleeding a lot. Maybe it was fine, maybe it just needed cleaned and bandaged, but after everything happened with Ronan, something inside of me had changed.

I was no longer able to determine a minor medical emergency from a dire one. Everything felt on the same important level, especially with the kids. The most minor of cuts and scrapes filled me with a flash of panic – was this enough to take my child from me, as Alex had been taken?

Trying not to frighten the children, I buried down my fear, but not my urgency.

“Why don’t we go to the medical ward and have this checked out?” I asked, attempting a smile. It was tight and

awkward.

“Okay,” Alex said, attempting to be brave. I lifted him into my arms. Madison stayed by my side without needing me to say a word as I walked us all to the medical ward.

We were given a room where a nurse helped clean and bandage the wound. After a short amount of time, a familiar doctor came in to inspect the work. My heart sank, seeing him. He had been the one to break the news to me about Ronan, and the one who had treated me afterwards.

He was one of the few people in the entire world who knew the truth about the miscarriage and who the father of my children really was.

“Everything seems fine,” he said, after inspecting Alex’s leg. “Just a little scrape. You’ll be up and about almost immediately, I suspect.”

“I prefer we cool it for today,” I said.

“Can we play in the playroom instead?” Alex asked.

“Of course,” I told him.

“Before you go, I’d like to speak with you privately, Lillian,” he said. “It won’t take but a moment. In the hallway?”

I nodded, and followed him out.

In the hallway, with no one around, he said, “I’m pleased to see the children doing so well. They’ve been given the best care, that’s clear. I only ask that… you reconsider your desire to keep secrets. The prince has suffered in silence these past five years. Would it be so terrible for him to know?”

“It would,” I insisted. “He will endanger himself, and… if he knew the truth, he would try to keep us from leaving. I’m sorry, doctor, but I need to stay quiet.”

He clearly didn’t agree, trouble on his face, but he nodded. He was duty-bound to keep my secret, even if he didn’t

want to.

“There’s something else I wished to discuss with you,” he said. “Regarding your brother.”

roze.

“After you left, I researched some of what happened with his death. I discovered that this wasn’t a simple miscommunication with the flower. In reading over Odette’s file, and in checking her condition for myself, I learned that she had never been in fatal danger. Her poisoning was mild. Food poisoning, most likely. The flower- should have never even been considered in her case, even if she were to receive the ‘best care.””

“Then why was it used?” I asked.

“I’m uncertain,” he admitted. “Either someone stole the flower to use on Odette, or there had been an order of authority from someone in the room. In a situation like this that wasn’t life or death, no doctor on staff would have taken the word of a servant as rule enough to use the flower on someone who wasn’t in critical condition. Someone in the room must have twisted the words to make sure things happened as they did.”
