Chapter 249

Lillian’s POV

Grayson hesitated to respond, which hurt more than I wanted to admit. I didn’t stay much longer in his presence. It was late and I was annoyed with him. Even though I didn’t believe the things Odette had accused him of, he was still being kinder to her than I thought necessary. She had accused him of terrible things, and he was still defending their friendship.

“Goodnight, Grayson,” I said abruptly. Confusion crossed his face as I turned and walked back to my rooms. He didn’t even say anything, just watched me. I checked before I went into my rooms, and he was looking at me.

There wasn’t anything else to say.

Returning to my bedroom and my bed, I stared at the ceiling for the rest of the night, unable to sleep at all. Instead, I was planning.

Grayson needed proof of Odette’s dark intentions to finally be able to see her for the manipulative person that she was. If she had been directly involved in Ronan’s death, that would hopefully be enough proof for him. If it wasn’t

No, I couldn’t face that. It had to be enough. Grayson wouldn’t forgive someone who would hurt a child, even if they had been friends in the past. He had turned his back on Ophelia before, even though they had been childhood friends. This would be the same.

I had to believe that. For my own sake. And for Grayson’s too. If Odette did manage to manipulate him into marrying her, even after I were to leave again, the kingdom would be in danger. The kingdom deserved better than that, and Grayson did too.

Finding Teacher remained my top priority, but for the moment, I refocused. In the morning, after taking the kids to the tutors, I headed toward the hospital ward. There were some new faces there, but many of the doctors and nurses I recognized from five years ago.

Many, I wasn’t overly friendly with, but a few I knew well from all my visits to Ronan. When I saw one of the nurses I had come to know well, I stopped her and asked if she had time to talk. She seemed receptive, until I explained, “I want to know what happened in the room with Odette and Gamma.”

“I’m sorry, Lillian. I would talk about anything but that. Patients have special privileges. As much as I want to tell you what happened, I can’t. None of us would. It goes against our code of ethics and we would lose our careers.”

“I don’t want that,” I assured her, putting her at ease. Her tension had been rising since I mentioned my intentions. “Let’s catch up anyway. I won’t mention it again.” I felt guilty now, for only thinking of my plans. We had been something like friends in the past, and I was curious how she was doing.

She couldn’t spare long, but we spent about fifteen minutes over coffee talking about the changes of the last five years. She seemed in good health, even if she did apologize several more times. After fifteen minutes, she returned to work and I left the hospital ward.

If I wanted to know what happened that day my brother died, I wouldn’t find the answers here. Instead, I needed to go to the source. Odette wouldn’t likely tell me the truth, but my father…

He would want to lie, but with how quickly he was to anger, I was sure I could get him to admit something. I just needed to be able to see him.

After being so publically disgraced five years ago, I learned that he didn’t often return to court, except for once or twice a year for larger events. If I wanted to see him, if I didn’t want to wait, then I needed to get him back to the

palace as soon as possible.

The only way to do that was to have my father be personally invited back to court. The Gamma would never refuse a direct invitation from the royal family.

Things had ended with tension between Grayson and I last night, but he was still my best chance at making this happen.

I found Grayson working in his office. No one stopped me from walking inside, not even Grayson himself, as I took a seat opposite him at his desk. I waited for him to finish what he was working on and look up at me.

“What do you need help with, Lily?” he asked.

“You aren’t going to like this,” I said. I’d spent my time waiting trying to figure out the best way to convince him.

He tensed marginally, folding his hands together on his desk. “Tell me.”

“I was hoping you could do something for me.”
