won’t let her,” Grayson said, and seemed so confident about that. Deep down, he really did feel like she could still be trusted, didn’t he? He had no idea how malicious she was.

My father might have given me that warning about Odette in an effort to frighten me, but that didn’t make what he said untrue. She was conniving and vicious. She would settle at nothing to see me in the grave and Grayson as her husband. She wanted that throne. It didn’t matter if I wasn’t with Grayson anymore. My very existence was enough of a threat.

“I trust that you want to,” I said.

There was something in his voice that made me turn to look at him. Something soft. Broken.

And as I looked, the same emotion I had heard in his voice was there on his face. Just like that, I wanted to fall into him, my walls cracking.
