Chapter 267
Lilian’s POV
Grayson had no choice but to leave, and I watched until he was gone. Then I went to my room and packed my own bag. After, I dragged it into the main room. I was about to go help the kids, when a knock on the door stopped me.
I went to the door and opened it. Benedict was there.
“I heard you were back,” he said. “I wanted to check on you and the children. Everyone is saying how Odette is a hero.”
“That’s a lie,” I said.
“I assumed as much,” Ben replied. “But the Queen is quite adamant. And she did arrive with a body.”
“He was already dead when she found him,” I said, but stopped short of naming Ophelia. While Ben was a friend I didn’t fully know who I could trust, or who else could be listening.
Benedict just hummed, like he could read between the lines. He was pretty crafty, so he probably knew exactly what had happened before Odette even tried to explain herself, lying to everyone.
“I’m not shocked to hear that,” Ben said. “I’d be more shocked if Odette actually told the truth for once. She’s always been a little liar, even when we were children. Maybe especially then. This isn’t the first time she’s used her saving Grayson to get herself out of trouble.”
Ben was observant, not just with Odette. His gaze slid past me and farther into the room, where he saw my suitcase sitting beside the couch.
“Are you going somewhere?” he asked. “Not back to the Lycan kingdom?”
“Given what happened, Grayson believes it would be safer to move us into a safe house,” I said. “I’m inclined to agree with him.”
“Yes, I suppose I can’t blame you for that.” He tilted his head. “I don’t suppose you would keep me in the loop about where you are going.”
“I don’t want to tell anyone,” I said, adding, “Especially here. Never know who could be listening.”
“Yes. True. The palace hasn’t been kind to you, has it? I hope, in time, things will settle down, and you can actually find a home here again.”
I had found a home here in the past, briefly, but it had been thanks to Grayson, as well as Teacher, Clara, Josie, and Ivory. With Grayson and I split apart, and Clara and Josie away from the palace, nothing really felt right anymore. Only my friendship with Ivory remained unchanged.
“In the meantime,” Ben continued, seemingly unoffended by my lack of response, “I hope you will send correspondence so we can stay in touch. I could be your eyes and ears in this place while you are elsewhere.”
I trusted the servants already to be my eyes and ears, but having another member of the royal family on the lookout on my behalf certainly couldn’t hurt. Especially with the suspicions now resting on the head of the Queen. Though, whether Ben shared in those suspicions remained to be seen. I wasn’t going to suggest it in case he wouldn’t approve.
“Thank you,” I told him, deciding it was safer to leave it at that.

I followed the servants to the King’s rooms. Entering, he was seated at a table, enjoying a plate of cookies Wordlessly but with a smile. The Queen was standing nearby, arms crossed, watching him with a heavy frown on her lips.
When I came in, she turned that attention onto me.
“What was that showing today, Grayson?” she asked sharply.
“Odette is lying,” I replied.
The Queen waved away my words. I got the impression she didn’t care if Odette was lying or not. She had the ending she wanted, and that was all she cared about.
I hadn’t forgotten the way she had manipulated my father to agree with her, even though he had no clear idea what she was talking about. It made me wonder how else she had been coercing him.
Ophelia had said that someone close to the King had been pulling the strings this whole time, even setting Odette on this course to hurt the children. No one was closer to the King than the Queen. But she had been so supportive of him and the kingdom for so long. Even if I hadn’t always agreed with everything she’d said or done in the past, she had never seemed vindictive or hurtful. She had even helped care for me when she thought I was in a coma.
