I cursed, clenching my hands into fight fists, my blunt fingernails biting into my palms.

A few days passed before I was comfortable stepping out of the mansion. The kids had a new tutor, one personally vetted by Grayson and known to be trusted. Prime Beta even agreed to stay and protect the kids. With that assurance, I left the house and met with Benedict.

We met at a café in the city, not really around the palace or the mansion. Benedict knew I wanted to keep where I was staying a secret and purposefully picked somewhere random, somewhere few nobles would actually tread.

It seemed like a nice enough café to me, filled with working people and hot coffee.

“Well, it is official, I’m afraid. At least according to the Queen. Grayson and Odette are officially engaged,” Benedict said. “And the Queen is really pushing it too, trying to sell this narrative that true love wins the day.” He laughed. “Forget that no one has actually seen Grayson and Odette together in weeks. She’d have a hard enough time even selling them as friends, let alone lovers, especially since you’ve returned. No one believes it, but no one is brave enough to speak up against the Queen either.”

I lowered my head, not really hungry anymore for the breakfast I had just ordered.

Benedict reached across the table and placed his hand on mine. “I’m sorry for all this, Lily. You don’t deserve to have to suffer through this. Grayson should have never put you in this position.”

“He doesn’t have a choice,” I said. “If he refuses, the Queen will lash out against him, and even remove him as heir.”

“And who would replace him?”
