Come now,” the Queen said. Odette weaved her arm around Grayson.

Grayson looked at me. I looked away.

“I’ll wait here,” I said.

“Don’t go ahead,” he insisted.

I nodded.

As Odette and the Queen dragged him toward the podium, a pit opened in my stomach.

“We have the happiest of news to announce to the kingdom,” the Queen said into the microphone.

“You really don’t need to listen to this,” Benedict said, appearing beside me. “Come inside.”

“I told Grayson I’d wait,” I insisted.

“I doubt he wants you to suffer through this,” Ben said. “Wait inside with me. When he comes you can go on.”

I did tell Grayson that I would wait, but… as the Queen continued, my stomach flip-flopped like I might be sick. I didn’t think that I could physically handle much more of this.

“This engagement will give the entire kingdom a reason to celebrate!”

Turning to Ben, I said, “Okay.”

He ushered me into the house. We didn’t go far, just a ways into the foyer, far enough for the noise outside to be more of a quiet roar in the distance, than something I had to forcibly listen to. But I was still visible from the doorway. When Grayson was done and came through, he would see me.

“There. Much better,” Ben said.

“Thanks.”

“You know, you don’t need to take part in this game. At all. There’s no reason for you to suffer.”

“I can manage,” I said.

“But you don’t need to.” Ben reached out and placed his hand in the small of my back. “What you need… What you deserve is a man who would put you first.”
