The handle turned.

“Maddie. Alex! Let us out,” Mom said.

“Not until you kiss,” Alex said. We giggled again.

Lillian’s POV

From the way they had been acting, I knew those two had been planning something. I had thought making Grayson and me compliment each other at dinner had been the worst of it, but now I could see that it was only the beginning.

The pantry was small, forcing Grayson and I to stand facing each other with barely any room between us. I wasn’ going to survive this. My heart was already quickening. My body was burning hot.

Our earlier kiss replayed through my mind again and again. It had held a promise of more in it, but that promise had been broken before. I didn’t want to let myself get too excited, or excited at all really. This was hardly the time our place.

But the kids wanted us to kiss.

“I’m not sure there’s much harm in it,” Grayson said.

“We can’t give in to them like this,” I insisted. “Or they’ll try this every time they want something.”

He shrugged. “It wouldn’t be so bad, as long as I’m trapped in here with you.”

His arm wrapped around me, and I swallowed hard. The last of my resolve seemed to shrivel away, disappearing entirely as I leaned my head back, ready to kiss him.

From outside, I heard arguing.

“How are we going to know whether they actually kiss or not?” Alex asked.

“They’ll tell us,” Madison said.

“But what if they lie?” Alex asked.

“They wouldn’t lie about that,” Madison said, though sounded less than sure. “We can’t open the door and look! Then they’ll get out.”

Grayson smiled a little. He called out, “I’m going to kiss you now,” he said, louder than he needed to, unless he was only saying this for the children’s benefit, which I suspected.

He leaned closer. I held my breath.

At the last moment, he turned and placed a soft kiss on my cheek.

“Such a nice kiss,” I said, just as loud.
