Lilian’s POV

One minute, I was resting in Grayson’s arms, and the next I was back in a familiar garden surrounded by fog. I looked down in instant worry, but I was clothed, wearing a simple white dress and a pair of flats.

Teacher was sitting at the park bench again. “You look happier today,” he said when he saw me.

“I am,” I said.

He nodded, but didn’t ask why. I didn’t tell.

“I tried to find you,” I told him. “I saw you, at the palace. I chased the figure of you to the Queen’s study, but you weren’t there.”

“Are you sure I wasn’t?” he asked.

“You weren’t physically,” I said, and thought of the necklace. “You told me before that you are imprisoned, and closer than I would think.”

“Yes.”

“What would that prison look like? I can’t imagine any jail cell holding you for long.”

He thought for a moment, then sighed, his head lowering. “I’m sorry, but I’m not sure. I didn’t see it happen. I just” His voice cut off abruptly. He sighed again, even more deeply. “I can’t say.”

The magic of his prison was also keeping him from revealing the nature of his capture or the identity of his captor. I could only imagine how frustrating that could be for him, since it was very frustrating for me.

He looked at me again. “Did you escape the study unharmed?”

“Yes,” I said. “Grayson was with me. But the Queen did see us. She was furious.”

“Please be careful, Lillian,” Teacher said. “Do not go anywhere without Grayson at your side to protect you.’

A hint of irritation flashed through me. “You trained me well, Teacher. I can handle myself.” I wasn’t opposed to the idea of staying with Grayson, but I didn’t like the implication that I needed him.

“This is not a question of ability,” Teacher said. “I say this as much for Grayson’s sake as for yours. If you are captured alone, no one will know what happened to you. You will be lost.”

A far-away look came over his face, and my heart ached. He was talking about himself.
