Chapter 292

Lilian’s POV
I decided not to go to the palace today with Grayson. I was feeling a little awkward about last night, though I had no regrets. Plus, I wanted to take some time examining the necklace I had taken from the Queen.
After the kids went to tutoring, I sat in the living room, looking more closely at the necklace that was practically identical to my mother’s. I doubted the Queen would be able to tell. Grayson had mentioned when I asked him that he discerned no visible difference.
I couldn’t see any difference visibly, but I could feel it. Something was definitely off about this necklace. It gave a kind of eerie ominous aura that did not match my mother’s necklace at all. Nostalgia had warmed my mother’s necklace for me. This one just felt wrong.
I had no idea if it could be a prison. Maybe it was a key? It gave no hints for its purpose beyond a decorative trinket. It had to be more than that.
I remembered seeing the portrait of a Queen from old in the library, who had been wearing a necklace just like this. Could this be the same necklace? What did it have to do with the line of Queens? And how did it tie together with my mother and my lineage?
My head was hurting from all the questions I just didn’t have the answer to. Thinking about them seemed to be of no use, but I also didn’t know where to turn for more information. I had tried searching the palace library before with limited success. Teacher knew things, but in his present state, he was unable to tell me anything.
With a sigh, I tucked the necklace into my pocket and headed downstairs. Grayson’s library wasn’t quite as old and substantial as the one in the palace, but I didn’t want to just stand around doing nothing. At the very least, perhaps I could search for any traces of magic in the modern world. From there, maybe I could explore other options.
Yet, before I could reach the office, I was stopped by a servant.
“A letter has been redirected here from the palace, my lady,” the servant said, holding out said letter.
I recognized the penmanship right away as Reginald’s and accept it. “Thank you.
In the library, sitting at one of the few small desks dotted among the stacks, I opened the letter and read.
Dear Cousin,
I hope this letter finds you well, and in secrecy. Please be careful that the seal was not broken. If it was, there is little we can do, but be aware that they know what we know.
What was he talking about? Was this letter secret, not just urgent? All in this kingdom were aware of my duty to find Teacher. I continued reading.
Regardless of the danger of being intercepted, I needed to reach you as quickly as possible. The scope of your duties has been expanded.
We are still hunting the Lone Archer for his assistance, yes. Do not yield in this search. But now you have a secondary objective, that may temporarily override the importance of the first.
We’ve intercepted a message from the Queen of that kingdom to the Bear Clan. We believe this was not the first message of this kind to have passed across the border.
From it, we were able to discern that the Queen is attempting her own diplomacy efforts. This would not be

problematic if she included us in any of her plans. Rather, the Lycan Kingdom seems purposefully excluded.
e is asking to host an ambassador from the Bear Clan to prove the kingdom’s goodwill.
That she hasn’t communicated any of this to us makes us suspicious that she intends to betray us for her own gains.
Your secondary mission is thus: infiltrate and learn the Queen’s true intentions.
Do what you can to keep this duty a secret. If you need to flee for your safety, we will understand. Your safety and/ that of the children must be a priority. But if you can do this, the Lycan Kingdom would be in your debt.
Stay safe.
