Chapter 295

Lillian’s POV

+15 8gnus

While Grayson was waiting for the Bear Ambassador to join him, I kept my eyes locked on the man, watching as he went anywhere in the room. He sure was keeping Grayson waiting a long time. He didn’t even seem to care about it either, laughing and drinking.

Eventually, he called for Josie to join him. “Where is my potential match?!” he called from across the room. “Get over here, meet your man, see if we get along with each other.”

Her hold on my arm was vise-like. “I have to go over there,” she said. “Please come with me.”

“I won’t leave you alone with him,” I promised.

Together, we walked across the room to where Charles and his guard were around the buffet tables. All of them were eating with their hands, not a fork in sight. One of the guards was standing at the drink table, downing glass after glass of wine, almost faster than the servants could fill them.

Charles was waiting for us. As we came closer, he reached for Josie, but I kept her at my side. He looked at me. “ Who are you? Her protector?”

“Something like that,” I said. “There is decorum to these things.”

Some of the bears laughed.

“I didn’t think a bunch of lowbrow wolves would be so snobby,” Charles said.

I narrowed my gaze at him.

“Allow me to make introductions,” Josephine said, regaining some of her poise. Not enough to let go of me, but enough to stand a bit taller. Her voice was stronger. “Bear Ambassador Charles, this is Lycan Ambassador Lillian.”

The bears in earshot immediately stiffened.

“The Lycan Kingdom?” Charles said with clear disgust. “Those are the ones we’re standing off against at the border.”

“Yes,” I said.

“We are all allies here,” Josephine said.

He shifted his glare to her.

“Do you know the Bear King?” I asked. Knowledge of bear customs was somewhat limited here in werewolf territory, but we knew the basics. The bear clan didn’t call themselves a kingdom, but they still had a king, and an entire hereditary system of government. An ambassador should have the ear of the king, as they act as the mouthpiece.

“Everyone knows the Bear King,” Charles said, which seemed like a perfect deflection of the question.

“Has he approved of this match?” I asked. “Doesn’t he want to meet Josephine to learn if he is suitable?”

“If I find her suitable, that’s all he cares about.”
