Chapter 304
Grayson’s POV

I twisted until the crack tore through the entirety of the shackles and my hands popped free. Then, quickly, I reached up, and tugged at the collar around my neck, trying to break it. Unfortunately, the metal here was thicker, stronger, and wouldn’t budge or bend as easily.
Breaking the collar seemed impossible at my current strength. Not without tools. So I grabbed the cage bars instead and attempted to pry them open. They started to groan, bending just slightly.
Heavy footsteps sounded outside of the tent, coming closer. I’d lost my chance.
Huffing in frustration, I abandoned my plan to bend the bars. Returning my hands behind me, I grabbed the shackles and attempted to put them back on as best I could. They were loose, still broken. I’d be able to drop them at any moment. But I didn’t want to give myself away too soon.
I barely got back into my previous position, sitting still with my hands locked behind my back, when the Bear King entered the room. He wasn’t alone this time, a few soldiers following him. They seemed more comfortable with the King than regular warriors, and the various medals and adornments on their uniforms told of their importance.
Likely, they were the King’s battle advisors. But it didn’t seem like they came to advise him on the war today. Instead, they came over toward me sitting in my cage.
“This is the one of the werewolf princes,” the Bear King said.
The advisors moved closer, peering at me like I was some exhibit at the zoo.
“A sad sort, isn’t he?” said one of them.
“And so small,” said another. “Weak.”
“Don’t be overly fooled by the weak aura,” said one of the advisors. The oldest, with shock white hair and a thick, full beard of white whiskers. “He’s wearing a dampening collar.”
“He’s still weak,” said one of the younger advisors.
“Alpha werewolves. Lycans. These are not to be taken lightly.”
“While I appreciate your judgements, Gregory,” the Bear King said, “The wolves are not to be feared, only ridiculed. That the prince was brought here, captured by Chuck and his ilk, is enough proof of his weakness. And if he is supposed to be the strongest of them, then we have little to fear. We will crush our enemies with ease and be home in time for dinner.”
Softly, under his breath, Gregory said, “How quickly the young forget the wars of old.”
Louder, I said, “You should listen to the most aged among you. He’s the only one with sense around here.”
“Should have put a muzzle on him,” one of the advisors grunted. A few others laughed.
The Bear King said, “It brings me amusement to hear him. He has no idea how quickly his kingdom is going to fall.”
“You underestimate all werewolves,” I said. “Your overconfidence will be your undoing.”
The others laughed, like the thought of falling to the werewolves was absolutely impossible. Only the eldest, Gregory, looked at me with wariness. I could see in his eyes that he had suffered through war before and had not

forgotten it.
This war will not be quick,” I said. “Many people will die on each side. If there is any way to find peace –‘
“The desires of the King will be made true,” Gregory said. “Regardless of losses.”
He didn’t seem happy about it, the corners of his mouth curling downward.
“The desires of the King will get you all killed,” I warned. “His arrogance will be the death of him.”
Gregory stared at me like he already knew that, while the others laughed and laughed. Even the Bear King chuckled, before he threw his empty mug at me. It clattered against the cage bars, then shattered/sending ceramic shards raining down on me.
The act was enough to silence everyone in the room. Laughter died immediately.

“You speak of arrogance, but your pride is too strong, wolf,” the Bear King snapped. “We’ll see how proud you are at sunrise, when the executioner removes your head from your body.”
