Chapter 309
Lillian’s POV
Teacher and I talked a bit more, but before too long, we had to get back to planning. The war was coming, whether we were ready for it or not, and all of us would rather be ready for it.
I had so many more questions for Teacher, about his past, about what it meant to be related to him. But there was no time for that. I hoped, after the war, we could take the time to sort through things, Teacher, Reggie, and I, and fill in the blanks of our past, as well as determine what this meant for the future.
For now though, Reginald and his advisors returned, and we all stood around the war map, planning.
“I was able to discern a measure of the Bear King’s power,” Grayson said. “He is not a force to be trifled with.”
All bears had brute physical strength, but for Grayson to say this meant that the Bear King must have surpassed
all the rest.
“The army is also much larger than ours,” Grayson continued.
“I can give witness to that,” I said: “I wandered through their camp and saw their number.” I tried to approximate, giving a number that made a few of the advisors pale. Reginald’s face hardened further. “But many of them were already celebrating. Drinking, sleeping, carrying on. They’re acting like they’ve already won the war.”
“They are overconfident,” Grayson said. “We could use that against them.”
“We also have contact with the Bears for Freedom,” Reginald said. “None of them want to fight this war. They just want to go back to their homes peacefully and live their lives.”
“Only a few of the bear warriors are that fiercely loyal to their king to want to fight this war,” I said. “The rest are only here at the King’s insistence.”
Teacher stroked his chin. “The only way to stop a snake is to cut off its head.”
We all looked at him, and he looked back, with meaning.
“We need to kill the Bear King,” Grayson said.
“It won’t be any easy task,” Teacher said. “But if he is truly overconfident, he could be called forward into a one- on-one challenge, given the correct bait.”
“You are strong, Lone Archer. The strongest of all of us with your magic,” Reginald said. “You could defeat him.”
“I am a legend of old, my time has come and gone,” Teacher said. “I’ll act as an advisor, and train any who need my aid. But the modern age needs a modern hero, and that is not me.”
“Then it falls to a prince,” Reginald said. “I will -”
“I’ll do it,” Grayson said with full confidence, loudly, before Reginald even had time to fully volunteer.
“I was in the middle of saying I would do it,” Reggie said, calling him out.
“You are strong Reginald,” Grayson said. “But I am stronger. If anyone is going to have a chance against the Bear King, it is me.”
The whole room was quiet, all of us looking between Reginald and Grayson. I didn’t want either of them to fight, but of the two, there was no question of who was stronger. Everyone knew it. Even Reginald. He just needed to let

go of his pride.
With a light curse, Reginald backed down. “Fine.”

They continued to plan, and I took part where I could. My mind and heart were in separate places it seemed. My mind was helping with the planning, but my heart was already worrying what could happen, what could go wrong.
I had just saved Grayson from the jaws of certain doom, and already he seemed set on running back to it.
With some plans in place, the group broke for the night. After a few soft goodnights, I went with Grayson back to our tent. We sat on the bed because there was no room to stand. We were both quiet for a moment before turning to look at each other.
“I don’t want to see you do this,” I said. “I hate that it has to be you.”
“There is no one in either pack who is stronger than me and my wolf,”
