“I should come with you,” Lillian said. The children were at their lessons, but she was still speaking in hushed tones like they could still somehow overhear from several rooms away. “What if something goes wrong?”

“Josephine will not turn me over,” I said.

“I’m not saying that. But what if she gets followed? You will need backup.”

“I’ve already arranged to have several of my secret guard on the scene,” I said. “I will be safe.”

I didn’t tell her the full truth. Yes, I was having some of the secret army be present, just in case. But if this was trap, or Josie was followed and a fight were to break out, I wanted Lily as far away from that location as possible

“Stay here with the kids. Protect them. Trust that I will do anything to get back to you,” I said.

Lillian was clearly unhappy about it, her bottom lip pushing forward in an adorable pout that I wished I had the freedom to kiss away. As it was, without permission, I remained stoic, but I thought about it. About kissing her. This was something that consumed many of my thoughts, much of the time. 1

“Fine,” she said, frowning. “But if you don’t come back, I will find you wherever you are and bring you back.”

She’d already rescued me once from the throes of certain death at the bear clan’s execution. I had no doubt my savior could do so again.

Finally, I allowed the intrusive thoughts to win out. I stepped forward, wrapped my arms around her, and kissed her gently. She melted into me at once, so delightfully responsive. It made me wish we had the time for more.

Maybe someday, when this was over, I could take my time taking her apart.

Too soon, the kiss ended. It was time for me to go.

“Please make sure Josie is alright,” she whispered.
