Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 320

Chapter 320

Lillian’s POV

I sat through the rest of the meeting, trying to decide what to do. The group came up with a few plans, but all of them had holes in them because their knowledge of what was going on inside of the palace was limited.

This line of conversation made me believe all the more that I should make the effort to connect with Benedict. He could be one more person on the inside who could assist us. He was a friend to me, and the brother of the late King. Surely he couldn’t agree with what the Queen was doing. He would believe that Grayson was the true heir.

The meeting paused as the members took a quick break to gather their thoughts and use the facilities. During this, Grayson came over to me.

“What do you have there?” he asked, eying the letter.

I showed it to him. As he read it, a line formed between his brow and a frown grew heavier on his lips.

“You can’t go,” he said, surprising me.

“I have to,” I said. “He could help.”

“It’s too dangerous,” Grayson said. “We don’t know which side he’s on.”

“He’s my friend.”

“He’s not trustworthy, Lily.”

“He wouldn’t do anything to hurt me,” I said, sure of it. Our friendship had its ups and downs, but Benedict would never knowingly put me in danger, I was sure of that. “He could be one of the people on the inside who could help us.”

A muscle in Grayson’s jaw ticked, but he didn’t say anything else against it. “If you are certain, I will trust you. But I ask you to please be cautious. The Queen wants me dead, and she will go to any effort to see that done, including using you against me. We don’t know if she has found a way to get to Benedict.”

I nodded, understanding.

“Speak with him. If you feel you can trust him, then do so. But do not reveal our plans too soon,” Grayson said. ” Not until you are certain. Just in case.”

He placed his hand on my arm near my wrist. It wasn’t a forceful or containing touch, just lingering. He was worried, likely jealous, but containing it. I was so grateful to him. Pressing myself up to my tiptoes, I pressed my lips to his, hoping to convey that gratitude as well as a promise to be careful.

Benedict was waiting for me at a busy downtown café when I arrived to meet with him. I felt safety in the amount of working people here, most just going along with their day, barely paying any attention to me or to us.

Benedict stood as I came to the table and leaned over to give me a quick hug. I returned it for only a second before pulling back and sitting down.

A waitress came over and I ordered a coffee and a bagel. After she left, Benedict said, “I’m glad you are alright. You disappeared so suddenly after Grayson was taken.”

“I followed him to the border,” I said and explained briefly about the rescue as well as the end of the war. I kept some things secret, like Teacher’s involvement and how he was my ancestor, remembering Grayson’s warnings.

“We owe you all a great deal for bringing that war to a close,” Benedict said. “It’s a shame that most people here

don’t know what went down. The King’s death distracted most people from the war. When the Queen took over. everyone assumed Grayson had died as well. The Queen promised the people she would keep the war from their doorstep, and I think almost everyone believed her.”

I made a humming sound, non committal. Watching Benedict, I tried to detect a hint of just how much truth he knew. He was difficult to read though. He always seemed earnest, even if he wasn’t. I’d learned that long ago.

“Grayson is back,” I said. “The Queen has declared him an enemy of the crown.” 1

“A misunderstanding, I’m sure,” Benedict said. “If they could both get over their own egos and actually talk to each other, they could work this out without violence. They are both too big-headed though.”
