Chapter 322
Lillian’s POV
“I’m sorry to have kept it secret for so long,” she said. “I was living in fear for them, for the danger they were in if they were to stay here. I… I know that’s no excuse. You had a right to know.” Worry crept into my heart, coupled with the relief I felt for finally telling the truth. All of it was too much and I covered my face, ashamed of the tears that were falling now. “You must hate me.”
He moved at once, wrapping me in his arms. I hid my face against his chest, not wanting him to see how much l was falling apart. For so long, I had held myself together, even as I was falling apart. I never wanted to do any of this without him, not really. But I’d just been so afraid.
“I could never hate you,” he said, so simply and so confidently that I could do nothing but believe him. “You ha your reasons, and though I don’t fully understand them, I trust you. You did what you had to do to protect our children, and you have protected them. You raised them to be the great kids they are today. That was all you, Lily And I couldn’t be more grateful for that.”
“I kept them from you…”
“You have gifted me the best thing in the whole world,” he said. “A family. And I will spend the rest of my life trying to earn them. To win you. Lily, please consider this as a declaration of my intentions. I want to marry you, and have our family whole. I’m going to do everything I can to win you back.”
“Grayson…”
I pulled back from his chest to look up into his face, wanting to see his expression, to truly know whether he hated me or not. I saw no hatred there, not even an ounce of it. His eyes, his smile, all of it – all of him – was filled with love.
Even though I must have looked like a mess, crying as I was, that expression did not change. He didn’t seem to care at all as he leaned down to kiss me, and kept kissing me until my tears dried up, my whimpers became moans, and we became lost to each other once again.
The morning came too quickly, and before long, it was time for the King’s funeral. Grayson and I tried to maintain a cool front around the children, not wanting them to know anything was wrong. They might have suspected though, when I held them before they went with the tutor, I gave them extra long, extra tight hugs.
