Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 323

Chapter 323

For an hour we waited. Then, finally, it became our time to file into the throne room. The Queen was there, already wearing a shining crown, sitting up upon her throne, sitting in the King’s chair now, rather than the one beside it that she had previous occupied.

From what I had heard, her official coronation had yet to occur. But that didn’t seem to have stopped her from acting like she was already the ruler of the land.

She stood and waved to the group we were in as we pushed through the throne room. The King was laid on a raised dais in front of her, surrounded by flowers. The crowd pushed through making their way toward the King’s body to view him and then back out the door.

“Thank you all for attending,” the Queen announced. It seemed strange for her to give such a speech during an otherwise somber and silent event. “Your support for me in my grief and in my reign means the world to me.”

Most people weren’t paying attention to her, but those that were, started whispering to each other.

“We are here for the King, not her,” said one of the mourners, though he said it softly, more a private grumble than something he was willing to face possible backlash for.

Too soon, we neared the section where we were going to have to split ways.

“Grayson,” I whispered, not wanting to let him go, frightened now that we were so near the point of no return.

He leaned down and kissed me. “Your role is important,” he whispered. “I’m depending on you.”

“Be careful,” I told him.

“And you,” he replied.

After one more quick kiss, we went our separate ways.

Half of the warriors came with me, as we split away from the group, disappearing into a side passage that the servants used. None of them stopped us as we walked through. Maybe they even recognized us, but they didn’t say a word, simply turning their heads, pretending not to notice us. 1

Soon, we neared the stairwell to the dungeons. But we waited, hiding in the servants’ hallway, waiting for Grayson’s distraction to call away the guards.

My stomach flipped.

Goddess, protect him.

Grayson’s POV

As I neared my father’s body, I readied myself, nodding at the remained warriors who were around me. It was almost time.

A beat. Then two. And I was standing directly between my father and the Queen up on his throne.
