Surprise filled Prime Beta’s voice and he stepped back, out of the way. I surged forward, pushing through the doors of the dining room and into the foyer.

Lily was there, unharmed but for a red mark around her neck. I ran to her and grabbing her, coiled myself around her. I pressed my nose to the nook of her neck and shoulder, breathing her in. I could hardly believe this could be her, but her scent told no lie. She was here. She was safe.

She held onto me as desperately, a sob in her voice, even though she seemed to be holding it back. was afraid to learn how close she had come to death, knowing it would put me in a rage that would only end with my uncle’s death by my hand.

The red mark on her throat was damning enough.

“How are you here?” I asked her. “I was ready to tear apart the world to get you back.”

“Ben let me go,” she replied. “I didn’t think he would at first. But when I talked about the kids, something changed in him. He’s not an ally, but I don’t think he’s totally unfeeling…”

I squeezed her tighter to me.

I did not in any way trust Ben’s motives, but having Lily back was enough for me, for now. I would determine what to do with Benedict the next time I saw him.

Leaning back, I kissed her, then pressed my forehead to hers. We stayed like that for a long while, as the broken pieces inside of me rebuilt themselves in her presence.

“I was thinking,” she said. “When I thought…” He started again. “I don’t want things to end without the kids knowing the truth.”

“Lily… do you mean…?”

“We should tell them,” she said. “And maybe… we could think about restarting things. Slower, this time. Building a life together, I mean.”

“You and me. And the kids?”

“Yes,” she said, nodding slightly.

The broken pieces inside of my chest repaired themselves even faster than before now, slotting together in a way that was even stronger than before. Not only was she restored to me, but now she was talking about a future, a life, with all of us together.

The dream of my future felt within my grasp. If I could only reclaim the throne and eliminate all the danger the Queen was causing, then we would find peace.
