Chapter 327
Lulian’s POV
“Mommy!” Alex and Madison cried as Tutor Stephen led them to where we were. He seemed calm, like he too had been in on the evacuation protocols.
The children ran to Grayson and me. The alarm was blaring, and Alex was covering his ears. I placed hand on either of their shoulders, ready to guide them where we needed. I regretted that we would have to leave our things
behind.
We’d already lost everything once during the fire. Now it seemed like it was going to happen again. The kids were resilient, though, so I knew they would bounce back. We just had to survive this.
“Come on,” Grayson said, and waved us all down to the kitchen. There, the servants pulled back a rug which revealed a hidden door. Opening the door, there was a staircase that seemed to go down to a hidden storage room From there, behind a wall of preserve jars, was a secret doorway that opened to a secret corridor. Grayson led the way, with the kids behind him and me following the kids. Ivory and her son were behind me, with the warriors following along.
Only the other servants were staying behind, quickly cleaning up our trail. They were already trained on how to act if this evacuation was necessary. None of us would be mentioned. Grayson made sure they were all paid well already, but they also had an evacuation clause in their contracts. If it was needed, they would earn a bonus for their continued silence.
For them, I was glad something good would come from all this fear. I hoped they didn’t run into too much trouble with the small army of guards soon to arrive.
“Think of this as an adventure,” Grayson told the kids. “We are all explorers.”
“This does feel like a cave,” Alex said.
“What’s on the other side?” Madison asked.
“A whole new world,” Grayson told them.
The kids perked up some then, pushing their fears aside. Grayson smiled back at me over their heads. It was a guarded kind of smile that didn’t reach his eyes. He knew the gravity of this, and the worry that was taking hold inside of me. The danger was why I had wanted to keep the kids from him, and now here we were, in the midst of that danger.
There was no time to tell him the truth, especially in front of the kids, but the danger didn’t seem so frightening with him here. If we had been without him, I’m not sure I would have managed.
We were a family now, and we would depend on each other to be safe.
In my heart I knew, we were stronger together than we ever were on our own.
Benedict’s POV
I followed the tracker to the point where it had been destroyed. At the mansion, I had expected a fight. Fury filled me. We had been searching for Grayson’s secret hideout for some time, only to discover it under our nose.
Yet, when we arrived at the door, the servants allowed us in without any argument. They acted confused by our presence but that seemed dishonest. I knew what it was like to keep secrets, to play a part and wear a façade. When I looked at the servants, they seemed to be playing that part.

But they were loyal, or paid well, or both, because they did not break even when questioned.
der my instruction, the royal guard tore apart the mansion.
I went to where the tracker was, kneeled down and found it smashed.
There could be no question. Lillian had been here once. Now though, she was gone. As was our true target, Grayson.
The Queen was not going to be pleased with me. She had been hesitant to agree to this plan since the beginning, much preferring that I killed Lillian, rather than scaring and tracking her.
I cursed lightly. Maybe my own affection for Lily was clouding my judgement. Maybe I should have just killed her, which would have driven Grayson insane, and made him his own worst enemy.
But I hadn’t been able to do what was needed.
Now, I feared, there was going to be hell to pay.
Somehow, despite my best efforts to only use Lillian to my own ends, I had actually come to think of her as a friend.
Curse this soft heart of mine.
