Surrogate for the Alpha Prince in a Coma novel Chapter 336

Chapter 336

Reginald’s POV

After learning what had really been going on around here from Josephine, half of me wanted to go and confront the Queen right then and there. I hated deception, especially of this magnitude, especially when it involved my

cousin.

Only Josephine’s worried eyes and my own knowledge of decorum, which had been drilled into me over many years of princely training, held me back.

Confronting the Queen could lead to another war, and I had little desire to send my warriors up against whatever troops she could cobble together. Until I could speak with Grayson and Lillian, I needed to be extra careful not to cause more harm than good in this situation. A hard-headed approach often led to trouble.

Now that a day had passed, I waited for Josephine in the corridor bright and early. At this hour, the sun was barely out, though the servants were already milling about with their tasks.

I didn’t have to wait long for Josephine to arrive, walking swiftly down the hallway to meet me. Her face was serious, a mix of fear but determination. Honestly, I was surprised she had come at all. She seemed rather conflicted as she shared her secrets at the banquet.

“Good morning,” I told her.

“Morning,” she replied, before quickly launching into, “She has an office, but I think she uses it mostly for storage. If we want to find actual information, we need to either search my father’s old study or the Queen’s personal chambers. Both places will be dangerous for us, if we are caught.”

“Best not to get caught, then.”

She nodded curtly. “Perhaps if I knew just what you are searching for, we could narrow it down. Do we need evidence to confront her?” 1

“I’m certain at this stage, she would listen to no evidence. To confront her openly would be to make her a hostile enemy of us. No,” I said. “What I’m hoping to find is a hint as to what her true motives are. Is she only acting this way out of a lust for power, or is there something else driving her? The King would have given her anything she wanted, and I’m sure Grayson was going to make sure she was comfortable. Why would she choose such a risky move as she has done, to abscond the crown and try to make an enemy of a popular crown prince?”

“She has always been jealous of him, I think. Even if I hadn’t seen it at the time.”

“Searching for this might help us understand what she plans to do with the power of the King, now that she is so close to having it. If we know that, we can make appropriate preparations to block her.”

Josephine considered this a minute. “I think we should check my father’s office. She’s been so busy pushing forward with the funeral and her coronation that she has yet to order anyone to see to my father’s things.” Josephine hung her head slightly. “I sometimes wonder if she ever even liked him, let alone loved him at all.”

“This must be difficult for you,” I said, seeing her wilt. “I’m sorry.”

“No, I… I want to know. All the things you said, I want to know,” Josephine said. “My father was meticulous and observant, until age stole his mind… When he met her, he would have known the kind of woman she is. He might have left something for us to find, in case this worst case scenario should occur.”

“Then let us begin our search there,” I said. “Do you believe it will be well guarded?”

“No,” Josephine said. “She has only a few warriors left here. Almost everyone, she’s sent after my brother. Even

the future, we can thank Grayson for handling the distraction for us.”

“Do you think he’ll be alright?” she asked.

“Your brother and my cousin are both smart and strong, and both are well-liked in this kingdom. They will not be captured easily.”

She nodded.

I gestured forward. “Please lead the way, Princess Josephine.”

A bit of color filled her cheeks. “Please,” she said softly, “Call me Josie.”

Together, we walked to the King’s office. As we neared, we moved carefully, checking around hallways and looking around, careful to not be seen. The door was locked, but Josie had a key.
