Grayson’s POV

Ever since parting ways with Lillian, I’d been worried about her. I’d take to pacing around the campsite so much that even the warriors were starting to notice, not just Prime Beta, who never said a thing, just walked alongside me as he gave his reports.

The warriors, however, whispered, “He misses his mate. He worries for her.”

Rather than perceive this as weakness, they said, “He trusts her, too, or he wouldn’t have allowed this. A good King knows to depend on the strength of others. That he cares about her enough to worry is also a good sign. The false Queen only cares about herself.”

For two days I worried, before it was finally time to put our plans in action.

As we marched toward the palace, Prime Beta finally spoke up. “I am sure she is safe,” he said. “We have not heard anything of her capture, and I’m certain the Queen would have made that known in an attempt to trap you.

“No news is good news,” I said, knowing he was right, though it offered only temporary relief. Until Lily was safe and sound at my side again, I would remain uneasy. “She is capable. Strong. Brave. I know I have no reason to worry, and yet…”

“You still do,” Prime Beta said.

“Yes. I trust her, but anything could happen. She is dear to me. Being apart feels… unnaturally.”

I glanced at Prime Beta, who seemed stoic as always, but I wondered. Prime Beta had not always liked Lillian, hadn’t approved of her. While he had never been openly hostile against her, he had unintentionally supported his sisters against her. I trusted Prime Beta with my life. I knew he cared for this kingdom above all else, and honored the vows and bonds he made with me.

But still, I wondered…

“When this is over, I will take Lillian as my wife. This will make her Queen,” I said. “When this day arrives, can she depend on you, as I have, for your support? Will you be able to accept her as my wife and Queen?”

“I already have,” Prime Beta said simply.

That surprised me. I must have looked at him somewhat incredulously.

“We had tension in the past, it’s true,” Prime Beta said. “In the beginning, I was uncertain that she was worthy of you. But I have since seen the way she looks at you. More, the way you are with her. Since she has come into our lives, and especially since her return with the children, you have shown true happiness, something you only faked before.”

Yes, he spoke truth. Even now, I could feel the happiness inside of me. The distance from my mate was unbearable, but I was equal parts proud of her for what she was doing. My mate had courage. Just knowing she existed, that she was mine to kiss and hold, gave me the kind of unparalleled happiness that I never would have thought possible before I met her.

“You have my full support,” Prime Beta said, setting the matter to rest. “You deserve happiness, Alpha.”

Near the edge of the forest, it became time to part with Prime Beta and my army. Their path would lead them on an open march to the palace. The trap, to lure out the Queen’s armies, moving them away from the palace and the coronation ceremony.

Meanwhile, I would go with only a handful of warriors to meet Lily at the servant entrance of the palace, where I would sneak inside and confront the Queen directly at her own coronation ceremony.

It wasn’t a flawless plan, but it was the best we had. We needed to make this work.

Before separating, I turned toward Pritne Beta and offered my hand for a handshake. Beta’s lived to serve their Alphas, expecting nothing in return. But Prime Beta had been my companion and advisor for many years. He was more than a servant. He was a friend.

We were both heading into danger, and would not see each other again until it was done. I needed him to understand his friendship mattered to me.

Prime Beta seemed surprised, but didn’t hesitate for long before reaching forward, clasping my hand with his. We shook.
