Chapter 180 Dog-eat-dog

:

“So, their batch of illegal ore is about to show up?” Dora asked.

Dora looked at Clive with a knowing smile.

“What are the guys from Blackflame Trading Guild waiting for?”

“Since Blackflame Trading Guild smuggled the illegal ore, it should be in Blackflame’s hands.

“Otherwise, wouldn’t Boss Clive have confessed for nothing?”

Clive nodded and turned to leave.

Rafe watched Dora shrewdly, his blue eyes narrowing. “Dory, are you planning to pull a heist on another gang?”

Dora smiled innocently. “No, I’m just making sure things end up where they belong.”

The air in the Shawn family study was thick with tension..

Cassian sat behind his desk, an Optical Brain screen displaying a freshly drafted trade contract.

Kael stood by the window, his back to Cassian, his expression unreadable.

Regina leaned against a soft couch, her face still pale, but her eyes held a glimmer of hope.

Her body hadn’t fully recovered, but she couldn’t afford to rest now.

The Shawn family was facing a life-or-death crisis.

Crystal ore.

The batch of illegal ore smuggled out of the Frostveil Planet was their last bargaining chip.

“Have you contacted the buyer?” Regina asked, her voice rough from exhaustion.

Kael turned away from the window, facing her with a serious look. “It’s done. Everything’s set.

“Both the military and the black market buyer are making their deals on the same day.

“The price isn’t as high as we hoped, but it’s enough to keep the Shawn family afloat.”

“Can we trust them?” Regina asked.

“Yeah, it’s solid,” Kael said. “Someone high up arranged for their people to handle the military deal off the books. No issues there.

“And the black market? They’re pros at this stuff.

:

“Money and goods change hands, everyone walks away. Clean deal, no strings attached.”

Regina briefly closed her eyes and let out a long breath.

This was the only good news she’d heard in weeks.

“Then… let’s get it done as soon as possible,” she said.

“When’s the deal going down?” Regina asked.

“Three days from now,” Kael said, walking over to Cassian’s desk. “The location is a warehouse at the abandoned port in the East District.

“I can’t show up myself, so Cassian will lead the team. I’ll have a few of my most trusted men go with him.”

Cassian stood off to the side, uncertainty in his voice. “Dad, am I really up for this?”

“But what if…” he trailed off.

“No ‘what ifs,” Kael cut him off. “Only the few of us here know about this. We haven’t even told the other families we’re working with.

“Once the deal goes through and the ore turns into starcoins, the Shawn family survives.

“After that, we’ll get another batch from the Frostveil Planet elders and fix the shortfall.”

Regina nodded, a cold, determined glint flashing in her eyes.

“Go on, and make it quick,” she urged.

Cassian nodded, tapped out the last few words on the Optical Brain, and hit send, sealing the deal.

Three days later, the deal.

Those three days felt like forever.

Cassian didn’t catch a wink of sleep.

He checked every step of the transaction over and over.

Transport routes, handover locations, security, he scrutinized them all.

This batch of crystal ore was the Shawn family’s last shot at survival, and there couldn’t be a single slip-up.

Kael brought in his top squad to handle the transport and security.

Twelve men, all with supernatural abilities at Level 5 or above, kitted out with the best gear and trained to a razor’s edge.

Leading them was Tyler Jackson, a burly guy with the Moderate Level 6 supernatural ability. He’d spent ten years with an interstellar mercenary group, had blood on his hands, and had seen more than his share of action.

“Tyler,” Cassian said, his tone grave as they prepared to head out, “this shipment means everything to the Shawn family. I’m trusting you with it.”

Tyler flashed a wide grin, his sharp canines gleaming. “Relax, Cassian. With me on the job, nothing’s gonna happen to the goods.”

Cassian nodded, finally feeling a bit of relief settle in.

The day of the deal, the weather was so gloomy it felt downright ominous.

Heavy clouds hung so low, it was like they were about to crush everyone beneath them.

The air reeked of the wet season’s musty dampness, and every so often, the distant roar of a mutated alien beast echoed, making your skin crawl.

The convoy drove through the bleak, empty wilds.

All around were abandoned mines and rusted machines, and every so often, one’d catch sight of a few bleached skeletons from some forgotten era, their bones stark and unsettling under the gloomy sky.

The twelve guards rode in three hovercars, escorting the heavy transport truck carrying the crystal ore in the

center.

Cassian sat in the front passenger seat of the first hovercar, his palms slick with sweat.

“How much farther?” he asked.

The driver glanced at the navigation. “3 miles ahead. The warehouse we’re meeting at is just next to the abandoned mining zone.”

Cassian took a deep breath, his hand tightening around the energy gun at his waist.

3 miles.

Almost there.

Cassian and his crew arrived at the drop-off site ahead of schedule, making preparations in advance with extra caution.

He stood by the window on the second floor of the warehouse, his eyes alert as he surveyed the darkness outside.

Behind him, the twelve handpicked guards were stationed at strategic points throughout the warehouse.

The crates of blue-hued crystal ore lay quietly in the center of the warehouse, like slumbering treasures.

“Cassian.” Tyler said, stepping out from the shadows and lowering his voice, “when are the buyers getting

here?”

Cassian checked the time. “Fifteen minutes.

:

“The military team is coming from the north, black market crew from the south.

“Once they’re here, we exchange the goods for the cash and get out fast.”

Tyler nodded, but he had this uneasy feeling he just couldn’t shake.

Cassian felt it too. He instinctively gripped the energy gun at his waist and peered out into the thick, suffocating darkness beyond the window.

There was nothing out there.

Only the rain tapping against the glass.

Way too quiet.

Meanwhile, outside the warehouse.
