She stood up and headed for the kitchen. Elmer, who had been experimenting with recipes at the counter, assumed she was coming to see him and perked up, bobbing his head with excitement.

Dora walked to the kitchen island and pulled out the ingredients she needed for the day. “I’m heading upstairs for a nap. Don’t call me until dinner.”

Then she walked off without another glance and made her way up the stairs.

As she passed the second floor, Lioren shot her a look of displeasure.

All morning, Dora had noticed more than the faint soreness still lingering in her body and the subtle shifts in how the three males in the house behaved toward her.

Something inside her felt different. A new fullness hummed beneath her skin, a sense of vitality that had not been there before.

She returned to her room, locked the door behind her, and stretched out on the soft, dry cushions.

The realization hit her then. The cushions and bedding that had been soaked through in last night’s storm were gone every piece replaced with fresh ones, and all of them carried Clive’s scent.

Warmth spread through Dora’s chest almost instantly. She finally understood why Clive had disappeared so early in the morning. He had gone to clean up her room for her.
