Before he got out of the car, Damian had steeled himself, thinking about how to confront her. But the moment he saw her, his heart

Isabelle glanced at the paper bag he was holding out and took it. “What’s this?” she asked.

“Open it,” Damian said, not elaborating.

Isabelle carefully opened the paper bag and pulled out a stack of documents.

Her eyes landed on the prominent heading “Divorce Agreement.”

She looked up at him in disbelief. Tears instantly welled up and spilled over, leaving dark spots on the paper bag.

She had never imagined this outcome. She thought Damian would, at worst, turn and walk away, or give her the silent treatment for a few days.

She never expected him to be capable of this–serving her with divorce papers.

Her voice choked as she asked, “You… you want a divorce?”

Damian was silent.

She pressed on, “Just because of this, you want a divorce?” The papers trembled in her hands.

Damian hung his head, saying nothing.

Shouldn’t I? You cheated on me. Letting you go should be exactly what you want, right?

Regina stepped out of the dimly lit living room behind Isabelle. She had just heard Damian say he wanted a divorce. So had everyone else behind her.

The lights in the villa flicked on. The maid controlling the background music, seeing the lights, started playing “Happy Birthday.”

The cheerful notes of “Happy Birthday” drifted out from the villa.

Damian looked inside. The villa was full of people–the same close friends and family who had witnessed his proposal to Isabelle. No one made a sound, nor dared to approach. All eyes were on Isabelle holding the documents.

By the time Damian processed the scene, Isabelle was already sobbing uncontrollably.

“I agree,” Isabelle said, wiping her tears. She looked at him. “Could you at least do me the courtesy of having some cake first” 1’t) sign after we eat.”

Damian was caught off guard. Isabelle agreed to sign?

Today was September 20th–his birthday. He hadn’t celebrated it in years.

Isabelle carefully slid the documents back into the paper bag. “What else? Did you think I actually cheated on you?”

The birthday song soon ended, and the villa fell silent again.

Damian was speechless. He had truly misunderstood.

He hurried forward and grabbed Isabelle’s hand.

Isabelle glanced at Regina and said quietly, “Let me talk to him for a minute.”

The people in the courtyard tactfully retreated into the main hall, glancing back occasionally at the two outside.

Isabelle clutched the paper bag and looked up at him, her voice soft as she asked again, “You want a divorce with me… just because I planned a birthday party for you?”

“No,” Damian said.

“I thought you were in love with Anthony,” Damian said quietly.

“What?” Isabelle exclaimed, as if she’d heard the most absurd thing. “I’m in love with Anthony?“.
