Now she finally understood why Damian had been in such a bad mood iately. It wasn’t about the old pain. It was jealousy–he was jealous of the time she spent with Anthony.
“Let’s eat,” he said, letting go of her hand.
Damian glanced at the people peeking from inside the villa, who quickly scattered.
He looked at Isabelle. “I let go of that old stuff a long time ago,” he said softly.
He’d actually wished for years that someone would celebrate his birthday, but no one ever dared.
The knot of tension inside Isabelle finally loosened. “I’ll let it go for now. But we’re not finished after the cake!” she said, trying to
sound firm.
A faint smile touched Damian’s lips. “Whatever you say, honey,” he murmured.
“Hmph!” Still pretending to be annoyed, she grabbed his hand and pulled him inside.
Everyone inside busied themselves, pretending to be occupied.
Isabelle led him in. “Sorry about that, everyone. It was just a misunderstanding,” she announced.
A wave of quiet relief spread through the room. But the awkwardness from the near–divorce still hung in the air, dampening the birthday mood they’d tried to create.
Only then did Damian notice the old villa was decorated with balloons, streamers, and flowers. It had never felt so warm.
Isabelle and the others must have worked on it all morning. An old record player stood by the faux fireplace. After the birthday song ended, the maid had put on a vinyl record Isabelle got from Daisy.
The melody of “Blowin‘ in the Wind” filled the room, slowly easing the tension.
“Dami, if you and Isabelle ever divorce, can I be first in line?” Daisy teased, unable to help herself.
Lynn quickly covered her mouth. “Shut up!”
Isabelle couldn’t help but chuckle.
Damian gave an awkward smile.
Regina looked at him, exasperated. “Get over here. We already sang. You still need to make a wish.”
Isabelle, still smiling, pulled him toward the cake.
Damian looked at her.
Louis lit the candles and sneered, “It’s a miracle you even found a wife. And you pull a stunt like this? If you ever do it again. I’m printing a picture of this cake and using it at your funeral.”
Damian had no comeback.

Theodore poked him from behind with his cane. “Make a wish. Hurry up. We’re all waiting for cake.”
Damian just nodded and closed his eyes, looking pitiful.
The lights in the villa went out. As “Happy Birthday” started playing again, everyone joined in.
Damian opened his eyes and blew out the candles.
Isabelle leaned close to his ear. “Happy Birthday, honey,” she whispered.
Damian turned and pulled her into a hug.
Everyone whooped and cheered.
“You know, I always heard the rumors, but now I see it’s true. Isabelle really might be the one who wears the pants in this relationship,” Daisy said with a laugh.
Lynn giggled too. “Guys really do change after they get married.”
“Did Lucas change?” Diana asked, leaning in curiously.
Hearing Lucas‘ name, Lynn glanced over at him. He was already looking at her. She quickly looked away.
“His case is special,” she whispered to the other two. “He needs a total reset. Like, drink–from–the–Lethe–River level of reprogramming.”
The three of them stifled their laughter.
“Honestly, I never thought I’d see the day I got to eat Damian’s birthday cake,” Regina said, holding Isabelle’s hand as they sat on the sofa.
She had thought Damian might never move past that incident. The year she saw him fall apart, it nearly broke her heart. Every year on his birthday since then, the whole family has tiptoed around him, afraid to say the wrong thing and upset him.
“I was scared too. I thought he might hate it,” Isabelle admitted. She had been more nervous than anyone, terrified it would send him back to that dark place.
“Thank goodness for you,” Regina said, patting her hand.
