“Mr. Vale is so good to you, Ms. Clark.” Thomas glanced at Daisy in the back seat.

“Is he? How so?” Daisy didn’t look up from her phone.

The way Anthony cared for her but resisted being cared for in return–it left her confused.

“He used to never get distracted at work. But after he met you that night, it was like someone flipped a switch.” Thomas caught himself and fell silent.

Daisy pressed her lips together. Thomas knew what had happened.

He changed the subject. “Mr. Vale sleeps wherever he works. He never stays in one place long. Unless it’s somewhere he can actually fall asleep.”

Daisy looked up. “He doesn’t sleep at night?”

“Not that I’ve seen. And if he doesn’t sleep, neither do I. Most nights, I’m with him–either working or drinking.” Thomas added, “To be honest, he just can’t sleep. In all the years I’ve worked for him, I’ve never seen him get real rest. Sleeping pills don’t even help. These past two months, though, I have you to thank. If it weren’t for you, I’d probably still be up with him every night.” He said it jokingly, but the truth behind it was plain.

Daisy turned off her phone screen. “Does he not like having the lights on?”

“He has some triggers. You might want to be careful about that. He usually keeps the lights off at night. If he can sleep, let him sleep as long as he can. Mr. Vale is a good man.”

“Yes. He’s a good man,” Daisy murmured.

Thomas wanted to ask whether Anthony actually slept at Daisy’s place, but it felt too personal. He didn’t.

Still, from how much better Anthony had seemed these past few months, he must have been sleeping.

Daisy went home. She made herself a simple lunch. By the time she woke up from her nap, it was too late to go to her parents‘ for dinner. She ordered takeout instead.

It started raining again.

She missed Anthony.

He’d given her his jacket. She wondered if it was cold where he was.

She picked up her phone and opened Anthony’s WhatsApp. She wanted to ask if he was coming back, but she felt shy.

Thomas said he slept wherever he worked. He probably wouldn’t come back tonight.

After all, he’d never really slept at her place.

She glanced at his jacket on the coat rack, ate her dinner quickly, and went back to her room to play on heɛ phone.

Late that night, Anthony turned on the light and walked in quietly. He changed his shoes, still carrying the chill from outside, and went to Daisy’s door.

He turned the knob gently and pushed the door open a crack.

She was asleep. The blanket wasn’t pulled up. Her phone was still next to her hand–like shed fallen asleep scrolling.

He walked in and tucked the blanket around her.

“I’m home.”

The corner of his mouth lifted. He stood by her bed for a long time before finally walking out.

Daisy hadn’t eaten a late–night snack last night. She woke up early this morning.

The first thing she saw was a small box on her nightstand.

“He came back…” She murmured, picked up the box, put on her slippers, and walked out.

In the living room, she found Anthony in the kitchen.

“When did you get back?” Daisy asked.

Anthony heard her voice and turned slightly.

When he’d come home, he’d noticed the kitchen hadn’t been used. The trash bag by the door was full of takeout containers. So he’d started making breakfast.

It was almost ready.

“Last night.” Anthony looked at the box in her hand. “Do you like them?”

Daisy hadn’t opened it yet. She did so carefully.

Inside were a pair of pink diamond earrings. Different from the ones she’d lost.

Did she like them?

Anthony turned off the stove and walked over to her.

He took the earrings out of the box and fastened them onto her ears.

He was so close. His scent washed over her. Daisy suddenly wanted to hug him.

But she didn’t dare move. The tips of her ears, where he’d touched them, were burning pink.

“I won’t go out at night anymore,” Anthony said suddenly.
