“Okay.” Anthony hurried downstairs.

Daisy frowned. She’d already gone up and down the stairs, talked to the babies over and over, and one of them still wouldn’t cooperate. It just wouldn’t turn around.
She was getting frustrated.
While waiting for Anthony to come back, she kept talking to the babies until her throat was dry.
She was starting to think she had no talent for this parenting thing.
When Anthony returned, she was slumped in her chair, both hands on her belly, looking exhausted.
“You okay?” He sat down beside her.
“I’m fine.” She managed a smile.
Anthony’s heart ached for her. He unwrapped the chocolate and held it to her lips.
Daisy had gotten used to him doing things for her. She didn’t even bother taking it from him. She just let him feed her.
After eating the chocolate, she got up to climb the stairs again. Anthony stopped her.
“We can come back tomorrow.”
Daisy didn’t want to suffer through this again. “No. Tomorrow I want to sleep in.”
Anthony looked at her growing belly, then reached out and touched it.
Daisy caught his wrist.
“What’s wrong?” He pulled his hand back.
“It moved.” She was excited. Then, timidly, “Do you want to say something to them?”
Anthony rarely spoke. Every time he’d said he wanted to talk to the babies, it had been a lie. He just wanted to sleep on Daisy’s lap.

Daisy had never complained.
Anthony’s heart stirred. He looked at Daisy’s belly, suddenly nervous.
There was hardly anyone around. It was almost noon. Most people had already left.
The hallway was empty except for the two of them.
Anthony knelt down beside Daisy and kissed her belly, almost reverently.

Daisy wanted to laugh but held it in.
Anthony looked like he was handling a ticking time bomb.

Daisy took his hand and placed it on her belly. “This is your daddy, Mr. Vale. Don’t be like him,/not wanting to say a word. If you grow up with social anxiety, you’ll be at a real disadvantage.”
Anthony looked up at her introduction. His steady chest suddenly lost its rhythm.
Daisy smiled at him, “Don’t just look at me. Say something to them.”
“What should I say?”
“Whatever you want.”
“Cover your ears,” Anthony said.
“What?” Daisy laughed. “I can’t listen?”
“No.” There was a glint in his eyes. “What I say to you, I’ll say tonight when we’re alone.”
Daisy’s heart pounded. Her chest rose and fell.
She did as she was told and covered her ears. Who would have thought this tough, iron–willed man would be so shy that he couldn’t even bring himself to talk to his unborn babies in front of her?
Anthony stroked her belly gently, impossibly tender. He looked up at Daisy.
Daisy looked down at him, then looked away.
Through her not–quite–covered ears, she heard Anthony murmur softly to her belly, “You’re wearing out my wife.”
She’d left her ears uncovered on purpose. She’d wanted to hear how this stoic man talked to babies.
The first thing she heard was, “You’re wearing out my wife.”
Her ears burned.
“If she gets too tired to get up at night, you’ll go hungry. And I won’t get any sleep either. Be good, both of you. The less your mom suffers, the better.”
Anthony kissed her belly gently through her clothes, his hand moving softly.
Her stomach suddenly bulged. Anthony felt the movement. Daisy felt it too.
She looked at him. A rare smile spread across Anthony’s face.
This time, the 4D ultrasound went smoothly.
On the way home, Anthony was in an especially good mood.
