Not happening.Joseph had never watched kids before, let alone two of them. I need to help at the lounge.

Christmas Eve dinner was the busiest night of the year.

Then you’re going on a blind date after the holidays. I’ve already picked someone out.”

Fine. I’ll watch them.Joseph muttered under his breath and shot Daisy a death glare.

Daisy looked small and helpless as she leaned closer to Anthony.

You’re impossible!Adrian threw up his hands.

Joseph kicked Anthony under the table, telling him to get his wife under control.

Anthony pulled his foot back and smiled.

This was the kind of atmosphere he’d dreamed about for years.

After dinner, Adrian took Priscilla out for a stroll.

Daisy dragged Anthony out front to set off fireworks, leaving Joseph in the living room with the babies.

Adrian had told him not to leave the house, so Joseph sat on the sofa watching the gala, two babies in bassinets beside him, sucking on their bottles.

Is your brother going to be mad?Anthony asked as Daisy pulled him outside.

No.Daisy found an open spot and sat down. Aside from refusing to go on blind dates, he’s pretty obedient.

Anthony smiled. Obedient wasn’t the word he’d use to describe Joseph.

Honestly, this is kind of my fault.Daisy held a lighter in her hand.

Anthony glanced at her. Her eyes were fixed on the fireworks on the ground.

My brother’s sleeve tattoo? That’s because of me.She pressed her lips together. Everyone thinks he’s some kind of gangster. The year everything happened, I set the house on fire. Back in the old house.”

Daisy drifted into the memory.

That winter had been bitterly cold. The snow had fallen harder than usual.

Priscilla had tried to hide the news from her, but Daisy had overheard anywaythat she could never have. children.

A girl’s reputation was everything. Add that news on top of what had already happenedthe devil inside her had taken over. She’d set fire to the old house.

The old house had been full of wood. Once it was caught, there was no stopping it.

She hadn’t expected to make it out. But Joseph and Lucas had run into the flames and pulled her out.

Lucas had dragged Daisy to safety, then gone back in for Joseph. Joseph had come out with burns covering most of his arm.

Lucas had yelled at hera tirade Daisy would never forget.

If you want to die, fine. But what about your brother? What about your parents? You want them to die with you? Your life might be worthless, but your parents have spent half their lives on you!

Lucas had gone on for a long time. Daisy had forgotten most of it.

She’d just held onto Joseph and cried.

Lucas had always been harsh with her. Called her stupid. Said she let everyone push her around. Back then, she and Lynn used to hang out together, and Lucas would yell at Lynn too.

So they’d both stayed far away from him.

Later, they’d run into Lynn’s grandfather by chance.

Lynn’s grandfather was into metaphysics. Adrian had gone to consult him.

Daisy hadn’t really believed in that stuff. But now, looking backGordon’s predictions had mostly come

true.

He’d said Daisy would have children. Lots of them.

And he’d set up Lucas and Lynnthat had worked out too.

As for Joseph, Gordon had advised him to stay home during the holidays for eight years. Then his life would go smoothly, and love would come knocking.

This was the last year.

So every year, for the three days of Christmas, Joseph wasn’t allowed to leave the house.

Daisy had thought Lynn’s grandfather was just trying to comfort her. But everything he’d said had come true, one by one.

By the time Daisy finished telling the story, tears were streaming down her face.

Anthony held her close, rubbing her shoulder.
