“Whatever,” Joseph said.

“Fine, then.”

Daisy grinned, hooked her arm through Anthony’s, and they strolled off.

Joseph looked down at the two babies in the stroller. Now that there were no more fireworks in the sky they started fussing.

“Don’t look at me. There are no fireworks in the yard. Cry all you want. Your parents ran off without you.”

He started pushing the stroller around the yard, talking to them.

Just then, a young woman in a red fleece cape with a hood came through the gate.

Joseph glanced at her.

Her eyes were wide with panic.

“Go ask! I bet they have one!” a bunch of kids yelled from outside. They pushed her forward, then scattered.

She looked terrified.

She wanted to run–then she saw Joseph’s tattooed arm and heard the babies crying.

Her feet felt like lead.

Joseph’s sleeves were rolled up, showing off his full sleeve tattoo. She stared.

With his annoyed expression, she felt like she’d stumbled into the big bad wolf’s den.

Any second now, she’d get eaten.

And the big bad wolf was holding one crying baby while pushing another in a stroller. It looked like a kidnapping in progress.

She watched Joseph bounce the baby awkwardly.

“Shh, shh, stop crying…”

The baby in the stroller cried even louder.

She pressed her lips together. Time to go.

The kids outside were making faces at her, telling her to go back and ask.

She looked at Joseph’s tattooed arm again. Then at the baby he couldn’t seem to soothe.

Joseph noticed her too. She was still there.

“Need… help?” Her voice came out in a stammer.

The kids outside stared.

“We told you to ask for a lighter! What are you doing, trying to be the baby’s mom?”

She laughed awkwardly. She’d been so nervous she’d said the wrong thing.

Joseph stared too.

She bit her lip.

“Hold her for me. I’ll get you a lighter.” Joseph walked toward her.

“Okay!” She smiled.

She stepped forward—wanting to get closer but too scared to. Joseph took two steps, and she took the baby. She rested Lyra’s head on her shoulder and patted her gently. Lyra quieted right down.

Joseph watched her. Girls had that magic touch with kids.

She crouched down and played with Luna.

Joseph went inside.

She was the niece of the elderly couple across the street. Joseph had seen her a few times as a kid, but this was the first year she was spending Christmas here. He didn’t know her well–his parents chatted with hers, though.

Joseph remembered her. He felt okay leaving the baby with her.

He’d heard she owned a flower shop.

Joseph didn’t smoke much. After Daisy set the house on fire, anything flammable had been hidden away.

He rummaged through the living room drawers for a while before finally finding a lighter.

When he came back outside, another woman–older–was holding Luna. Both babies were giggling now.

Joseph handed her the lighter.

Their lighter had run out of fluid. The corner store was closed. They’d spotted Joseph in the yard, trying to calm the babies.

“They like watching fireworks,” she said, nuzzling Lyra’s cheek. Lyra giggled. “If you take them for a walk, they’ll stop crying.”

“I can’t go out.” Joseph shook his head.

“Oh.” She looked confused.

“Go on, have fun,” Joseph said to her, reaching for the baby. “Come here, Uncle’s got you.”

Oh, he’s the uncle. She’d thought he was the dad. No wonder he’d seemed so awkward.

She watched Joseph. He was so gentle.
